一、water不可數(shù)

　　water表示“水”，是物質(zhì)名詞，不可數(shù)。如：

　　Please remember to water the plants while I’m away. 我不在時，請記住澆花。

　　The water in the lake is so clear that you can see the bottom. 湖水清澈見底。

　　A block in the pipe was preventing the water from coming through. 管道中的東西堵住了水流。

　　As water begins to boil, bubbles rise ever faster to the surface. 水開了，氣泡更快地升上水面。

　　We’ll take the boat out into deep water where we can dive. 我們要把小船劃進我們可以跳水的深水區(qū)域。

　　The water in the lake is not particularly deep, averaging about 12 metres. 湖水不是很深，平均約為12米。

　　If you give water to a small baby to drink, you have to boil it first. 如果你喂嬰兒水喝，你必須先把水燒開。

　　二、water用復(fù)數(shù)

　　但是，注意，water 雖然表示“水”時不可數(shù)，但在某些特殊情況下可用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　1. 表示“水域”“水體”時，可以用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　The fish are on sale from our own coastal waters. 出售的魚來自我們自己的近海水域。

　　Brackish waters generally support only a small range of faunas. 咸水水域通常只能存活為數(shù)不多的幾種動物。

　　The ill fated ship was sent off course into shallow waters and rammed by another vessel. 這艘倒霉的船偏離航道誤入淺水區(qū)，被另外一艘船撞上了。

　　2. 表示“礦泉水”“泉水”“噴泉水花”時，可以用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　We drink table waters. 我們喝瓶裝礦泉水。

　　A great poem is a fountain forever overflowing with the waters of wisdom and delight. 一首偉大的詩篇猶如一座噴泉，永遠噴出智慧和歡樂的水花。

　　注意，take [drink] the waters 為固定搭配，指喝礦泉水治療或到礦泉勝地療養(yǎng)。如：

　　He is taking [drinking] the waters at Bath. 他在巴斯進行礦泉治療。

　　3. 表示某國的“近海”“海域”“領(lǐng)海”時，可以用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　The government is allowing the areas of inshore coastal waters to be explored for oil and gas. 當局允許在近海海域勘探石油和天然氣。

　　The two countries are in dispute over the boundaries of their coastal waters. 兩國在近海水域分界線上尚存分歧。

　　Other nations are forbidden to fish the waters within 200 miles of the coast. 其他國家被禁止在離岸200英里的海域內(nèi)捕魚。

　　4. 表示“洪水”等大量的水時，可以用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　The flood waters subsided. 洪水退了。

　　Flood waters swept everything from their path. 洪水沿路沖走了一切。

　　People spoke of their fear as the floor waters rose. 人們說起看到洪水上漲時的恐懼。

　　DCS: The dam broke because there was no outlet for the flood waters. 由于那大壩上沒有泄洪口，大壩決口了。

　　5. 表示幾條不同河流或海域的水，習(xí)慣上要用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　The waters of the two rivers mingled (together) to form one river. 兩條河匯合成一條。

　　6. 在某些固定表達中，可以用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

　　in smooth water(s) 進展順利，一帆風順

　　pour oil on troubled waters平息風波，作和事佬，調(diào)停爭端

　　fish in muddy waters 趁火打劫，混水摸魚

　　fish in troubled waters 混水摸魚
