  It’s rather difficult.

I was rather angry at what he said.

This carpet’s getting rather old now.

I’m afraid our team’s doing rather badly.

We were rather tired after our long walk.

The new law has affected rather a lot of people.

The weather was rather worse than I had expected.

This hotel is rather more expensive than that.

He talks rather too much.

I’ve been to rather too many parties recently.

She lives in London, or rather she lives in a suburb of London.

I explained to him how far things had got, or rather had not got.

He ran rather than walked.

You are doing this for yourself rather than for me.

It was what he meant rather than what he said.

  3. would rather...(than)… 寧愿…(而不愿):I’d rather walk than take a bus.

He would rather have the small one than (have) the large one.

Frank is clever but rather lazy.

I did rather well in that test—better than expected.

  I rather like him.

She rather enjoys doing nothing.

  It rather surprised me.

I rather think we’re going to lose.

We were rather hoping you could stay to supper.

He is rather a fool.

  That’s rather a silly question.= That’s a rather silly question.

  (1)后接動(dòng)詞原形,其中的 would 不可用should代換,即使是第一人稱(chēng)也是如此(在美國(guó)英語(yǔ)中,有時(shí)也說(shuō)had rather,但不常見(jiàn));用于否定句時(shí),not一般應(yīng)放在rather之后,但在否定疑問(wèn)句、反意疑問(wèn)句以及簡(jiǎn)略答語(yǔ)中,可以在would之后加 not:

  We’d rather not go.

Wouldn’t you rather live here?

I’d rather have gone to the theatre last night.

We’d rather have told her the news.

I’d rather you went now (tomorrow).

  I’d rather he hadn’t done that.

時(shí),用would rather…than…(than之后也接動(dòng)詞原形,不過(guò)若與rather后的動(dòng)詞相同,通常省去):

He would rather walk than take a bus.

She would rather have the small one than the large one.

I’d rather like the film.

  5. rather than用法說(shuō)明:

I decided to stay at home rather than (to) go [going] to the cinema.

Rather than waste [wasting] your time doing it yourself, why don’t you call in a builder?

Rather than use [using] the last of my cash, I decided to write a cheque.

The teacher rather than the students is to blame.
