關(guān)于中文在行的英語
原文：He really knows a thing or two about such matters.
原譯：這類事，他確實(shí)略知一二。
辨析：Know a thing or two 和漢語的"略知一二"表面上何其相似!實(shí)際上卻是一對(duì)"假朋友"。"略知一二"的意思是只知道一點(diǎn)兒，常用于表示自謙，比如有人說："此時(shí)在下也略知一二。"其實(shí)說話人知道的不少。可是英語的know a thing or two 是一個(gè)習(xí)慣說法，其含義為"知道很多";"見多識(shí)廣";"有判斷力";"熟悉業(yè)務(wù)";"精明能干"等，相當(dāng)于know one's business or opinions ; know the ropes ; know what's what 。如：His mother is a woman who knows a thing or two . (他母親是個(gè)明白事理的人。)
原譯沒有表達(dá)出原句的確切意思，是因?yàn)闈h語說他人"略知一二"并沒有什么謙虛的含義，而是帶有一定的貶義，說那個(gè)人知道得不多，甚至只是一知半解。其實(shí)，從really一詞我們可以看出，原句里的know a thing or two帶有褒義。所以全句應(yīng)該譯為：這類事他確實(shí)很熟悉/了如指掌。"略知一二"的英語是know something (about)或not know much，而"只知道一點(diǎn)兒"，"一知半解"的英語是have only a smattering knowledge (of ….) ; have only some superficial1 knowledge (of….) ; have a rough idea (about….) ; know some half truth (about…) 。這些都含有貶義。
英語中還有一個(gè)說法：know how many beans make five , 其字面意思是"知道多少/幾個(gè)豆子是五個(gè)"，這好像是"連小孩都知道的簡單知識(shí)"，其確切含義卻是"精明;在行"，也是一個(gè)褒義的說法。
說一個(gè)人一竅不通，應(yīng)是not know the first thing about …, 如：I don't know the first thing about gardening . (對(duì)不起，我對(duì)園藝一竅不通。)
此外英語中有一個(gè)很有意思的說法：He know which side his bread is buttered. 你能猜出其含義嗎?其意思是說：他知道自己的利益所在，善于為自己打算
