Miss Turner had studied in a college (學(xué)院) in the capital before she found a job in a middle school in her home town. There she taught physics. As she had little expericence (經(jīng)驗(yàn)), she worked hard and did her best to make her classes interesting and lively.
Mr Green, the headmaster, wanted to know how the woman taught her students and one morning he had sat in the last row of the classroom before the bell rang. Miss Turner found him as soon as she came in. That day she was explaining to the children about sound. She wanted to show the headmaster how successful she had been in her work and began to test the children.
“Now, I have a sister in Washington. If I were calling her on the telephone, and at the same time you were 20 metres away, and listened to me from the other side of the street, who would hear earlier, my sister or you and why? ”
The children thought for a while and the cleverest boy answered, “Your sister, Miss Turner, because electricity travels much faster than sound waves.”
“That’s very good,” said Miss Turner. And she was going to ask another question when a girl stood up and said, “I’m sorry I can’t agree with him. Your sister would hear you earlier because when it’s eleven o’clock here, it’s only six o’clock in Washington!”

Some people remember things by writing notes to themselves. Then they leave the notes in obvious places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of the living room. I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late. I prefer to use an alarm clock to tell me what I should do. I have some alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, If I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television programme, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but not why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone, but I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time.

Helen Foster Snow, former wife of the late (已故) Edgar Snow (the world-famous writer of Red Star Over China), died in the United States on January 11, 1997, at the age of 89. With roots deep among her own American people, she was a lifelong friend of the Chinese people and a bridge-builder between China and America.
A small-town girl born and schooled in the southwestern U.S. State of Utah, Helen Foster came to China in 1931 when she was 23. Clever, attractive, eager to be a writer, she first worked as a secretary in Shanghai. There she met and married Edgar Snow, still a young and little-know journalist. Together they began to observe, study and write.
In 1936, Snow made his first-ever foreign journalistic visit to China’s then tiny Communist-led areas, which resulted in his world famous work, Red Star Over China. Within a few months, Helen followed with an equally dangerous trip alone, producing Inside Red China. Both books reflected (expressed) their belief that they had seen the most important center of China’s future.
Helen’s interest in industrial cooperative (合作) in China was lifelong. Her study of Chinese history, society, culture and women’s movements was also of good value. In celebrating Helen’s life, Chinese leaders sang high praise for her contribution to the friendship and understanding between Chinese and American people. For all these reasons, the new China conferred (授予) on her the title of Friendship Ambassador.

Fifty people died, over 11,000 were injured, and 100,000 houses were heavily damaged or destroyed in an earthquake that struck Shangyi and Zhangbei counties in North China’s Hebei Province.
The quake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale (里氏6.2級(jí)), hit the area 220 km northwest of Beijing at 11:50 a.m. on January 10, 1998.
Geng Qingguo, a researcher with the State Seismological Bureau (SSB國(guó)家地震局) Earthquake Date and Information Center, made a report of the recent quake in November 1993. Geng said that the area of northwestern Beijing, the joint of Shanxi and Hebei Provinces and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are most easily attacked by earthquakes measuring 6 to a bit over 7 on the Richter scale.
However, scientists did not see the recent earthquake earlier. Clouds covered a large area in the northern part of North China before the earthquake and experts say that this prevented satellites from correctly watching the temperature at the correct altitude (緯度).
SSB experts say that China may face a major earthquake from now through early next century. In the last ten years, about 305 earthquakes have occurred in China with 9 measuring over 7 on the Richter scale, 60 measuring over 6, and 236 measuring over 5. Tens of thousands of people died or were injured. Losses valued at over 10 billion yuan have resulted.
