During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened,I was disgusted with the way most people hadn't bothered to help. Right as I was about lo give up and start asking for a free ride from passing cars, a Mexican family in a van pulled over, and the father jumped out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need to brace it.Then he got a saw from the van and cut a section out of a big log (圓木) on the side of the road.We ro1led it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the whee1 off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands with. I tried to put a bill in the man's hand, but he shook his head no. With what looked like great concentration, he said in English,“Today you, tomorrow me .”This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.

Kenton Lee was walking through Nairobi, Kenya when he noticed that not only were children cutting the toes off their shoes to make them fit, the majority of them did not have any Shoes at a11.The shoe donations from the US were not sustainable(可持續(xù)的) as the shoes for the growing children’s feet would only fit six months before they became too smal1. He felt desperately that some sort of solution was needed for both of these concerns.

Before long, Lee founded an organization ca1led Because International and soon came up with the brilliant concept of a shoe that was adjustable and could last for approximately 10 years. Thus, two adjustable shoe creations have now been invented, one size small, and one size large. The first will adjust to fit from per-school to approximately Grade Four or Five, and the second fits from Grades Four or Five to approximately Grade Nine. This means that with just TWO pairs of shoes, these children can have dependable footwear throughout their entire school career.

Ensuring children have a pair of shoes is not only an issue for comfort, it is a health concern too.Worldwide, over two bi1lion people suffer from soil-transmitted diseases, therefore these shoes will protect the children's feet in more ways than one. The new design also offers better protection due to their creative design and concept.

The shoes are designed to easily compress, which makes shipping overseas very cheap. 50 pairs of shoes, for example, can fit in one suitcase on an airplane. The organization has presently started a funding campaign and are now ready to process their largest order for 5,000 pairs of shoes. To donate one pair of shoes costs only $l0 and the organization has set up a very simple process so that it only takes a moment to place an order and support this cause. The donated shoes will then be assigned to be sent around the world to children in need.

  24. What's the author's purpose of writing the passage?

  A. To appeal to people to show concern for children.

  B. To advertise the shoes for their creative design and concept.

  C. To introduce the good cause Kenton Lee started.

  D. To call people's attention to the worsening condition in Nairobi.

  25. How are Lee's newly-designed shoes different from conventiona1 shoes?

  A. They can be worn throughout a child's per-school years.

  B. They are mainly designed with the concept for comfort.

  C. They offer better protection thanks to specia1 materials.

  D. They can be adapted to fit the size of the wearer's feet.

  26. What has the organization done to make the donation practical?

  A. It has simplified the procedure of donation.

  B. It has effectively reduced the design costs of the shoes

  C. It has persuaded the airlines to ship the shoes for free.

  D. It has arranged to send the shoes around the g1obe.

  27. What might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Creative Ideas That work: A Concern For Children's Health

  B. Shoes That Grow: A Solution For Mi1lions 0f Poverty-Stricken Children

  C. An Organization That Helps: A Ca11 For Worldwide Donation

  D. A Campaign That Continues: A Fund-raising Movement For kids in need

For two women in the United Kingdom, mysterious vision problems that happened only at night or early in the morning turned out to have a rather harmless cause: looking at a smart phone in the dark.

In the first case, a 22_year_old woman told her eye doctor that she had trouble seeing out of her right eye at night while she was in bed. These episodes happened multiple times a week for a year. Each time, she said she could only seethe outlines of objects with her right eye, although her vision was fine in her left eye, and in both eyes the fo1lowing day.

In the second case, a 40-year-old woman told doctors that she couldn't see out of one eye when She woke up in the early morning, before sunrise. This vision problem lasted about 15 minutes, and happened on and off for six months, the report said.

In both cases, doctors later discovered that these vision problems happened only after the women had viewed their smart phone for several minutes, while lying on their side in bed.

The doctors hypothesized(假設(shè)) that these problems happened because the patients, without realizing it, were looking at their phone with just one eye, with the other eye blocked by a pillow when they were lying down. In this situation, one eye(blocked by the pillow) becomes adapted to the dark, while the other eye(1ooking at the smart phone) is adapted to the light, the doctors said. When the smart phone is turned off, the light_adapted eye is perceived to be“blind”,until it also adjusts to the dark, the doctors said.

The doctors also tried their own experiment, looking at their smart phones with one eye in the dark, and found that their vision was considerably reduced in one eye, and took several minutes to recover.

  28. Why is the vision problem mysterious?

  A. It only occurs at certain periods of the day.

  B. It is almost incurable with available treatment methods.

  C. Its cause still needs to be tested and confirmed.

  D. Its victims are mostly reported to be female.

  29. Which of the fo11owing is one of the symptoms of the vision problem?

  A. The victim suffers from permanent eye blindness.

  B. The vision is greatly decreased because of nearsightedness.

  C. The victim cannot focus accurately on distant objects.

  D. The affected eye can only get the main shape of an object.

  30. It can be learned from paragraphs 5-6 that ▲ .

  A. a smart phone lets out specia1 rays that may harm the eyes

  B. there is no link between the sleep position and the vision problem

  C. viewing smart phones with lights on contributes to the vision problem

  D. The vision of the affected eye will return to normal in a few minutes

How to Turn Around an Awkward Conversation

Have you been stuck listening to an inactive monologue or lost in a sea of silence? If ever, you know just how awful awkward it can be. 31

Decode the awkwardness.Figure out why the conversation is awkward and you will be better able to manage the situation. 32 In most cases, taking the time to understand how other people are feeling in the situation will make it easier to turn around the conversation. Rather than thinking about what to say next, simply reflect back what you hear the other person saying.

Keep the conversation flowing. 33 However, breaks in conversation lead to negative emotions and feeling of rejection. If someone makes an awkward comment, try to steer the conversation elsewhere by swiftly continuing to talk about the topic at hand without keeping on what was said.

Find the humor.Sometimes there really is no better solution to an awkward conversation than to change the tone completely. 34 If it is you who make the social misstep, poke a bit of fun at yourself to show others that you don’t take the situation too seriously.

Agree to compromise. If the conversation becomes awkward because of a disagreement between you and anther person, find a compromise that allows you to move forward. If the disagreement arises from your judgment of the other person, try to share his person’s feelings and emotions as if ther were your own. 35

  A. How brief silences in group conversations affect socia1 needs.

  B. Do this by telling a joke or funny anecdote to lighten the mood.

  C. Fortunately, there is hope for even the most awkward conversation.

  D. You just need to get up the nerve to smooth away any difficulties.

  E. F1uent conversations contribute to feelings of belonging and Self-respect.

  F. From this perspective, you can accept his or her viewpoint without sacrificing your own.

  G. Long silences, strong opinions and controversial topics can all create tense conversations.

The Brother searched the deserted landscape until he found a shabby cottage, in the middle of nowhere.A poor family lived in the cottage. The mother, father and children were dressed in rags. The Brother asked if he and the Monk could spend the night with them.“You are most welcome to spend the night,” said the father of the family. They prepared a simple meal consisting of fresh milk, cheese and cream for the Brother and the Monk. The Brother felt moved by their poverty and even more by their simple generosity.

When they finished eating, the Monk asked them how they managed to survive in such a poor place, so far away from the nearest neighbors and town. The wife looked to her husband to answer. In a resigned tone of voice he told them how they managed to survive“we have one cow. We sell her milk to our neighbors who do not live too far away. We hold back enough for our needs and to make some cheese and cream-- that is what we eat.”

The next morning, the Brother and the Monk said their good-byes and set out to continue their journey. After they had walked a few miles, the Monk turned to the Brother and said,“Go back and push the cow off the cliff!(懸崖)”“Father,'' the Brother replied,“they live off the cow.Without her, they will have nothing.”The Monk repeated his order“go back and kill the cow.”
