In February, 25-year-old Hallam Chitty graduated from his modeling training course. Just hours later, he fell from 15 meters out of a tree and became a paraplegic (下身麻痹患者).Not one to give up, he is now Australia’s first wheelchair model.

At first, the young man immediately thought his modeling dream was over, but looking back now, he said he was lucky to even be alive. “I have my good days and my bad days dealing with what’ s happened,” he said.

Hallam spent two weeks in a complete bed rest. In early March, Hallam was moved to the Hampstead Recovery Centre where he broke the record for his quick recovery. He was out in just eight weeks—a huge improvement on the four to six months he was told it would take.

“I was crazy about getting myself into shape, moving and being able to do things for myself again," he said. While he was recovering, Hallam was visited by Ute and Vivienne from Ute and Powell Models, which encouraged him to keep going.

“I honestly thought that my modeling dream was completely over, but they told me I could still sell my top half,” he said. On Monday, the 25-year-old worked his first photo shoot as Australia’s first wheelchair model with respected photographer Nectario Karolos Papazacharias.

Hallam said that though he was nervous at the beginning, he was proud of the final result. “Nectario gave me a lot of advice. He said ‘the wheelchair is a part of you now. Just be comfortable in it and play around in it—make it your own,' He gave me a lot of confidence.”

The support is something Hallam is excited to pass on to other people who are going through a similarly difficult situation. “If I could help someone else through what I’m doing, that would be very wonderful. Life doesn’t end because you’ve got an injury. It’s important to cheer up.”

  21. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Hallam Chitty’s Quick Recovery

  B. Hallam Chitty’s Pain and Suffering

  C. An Australian’s Modeling Road

  D. Australia’s First Wheelchair Model

  22. From Paragraphs 3-6, we can learn that_.

  A. Hallam tried hard to build a good shape

  B. Hallam rested on bed for nearly six months

  C. Hallam managed to make his wheelchair part of him

  D. Hallam won the respect of his photographer Nectario

  23. What message does Hallam Chitty mostly want to express in the last paragraph?

  A. Never give in to difficulties. B. Cheer for a new start of life.

  C. Always do wonderful things. D. Offer help to people in trouble.

  B

Have you ever felt you were being watched? Some new technologies might make you feel that way. Digital billboards (電子屏幕)are able to recognize certain human characteristics (特征). They have cameras pointed at the people on the street, and software that tries to recognize people’s age and sex. Then a computer inside the billboard uses this information to make ads for the people who are looking at the billboard. For example, if a man passes a billboard showing an ad for women clothes, the computer can change the ad to something that is more likely to catch the man’s attention, such as a restaurant, or sporting shoes.

Although advertisers see this as a great chance to reach their customers, some people feel that this is an invasion of their privacy (隱私).However, advertisers say that the billboards will not be able to recognize their face or get any personal information about them.

In fact, this kind of “personal” advertising has already appeared on the Internet. Search engines like Google and Bing can follow what we search for, because each computer has an identity of its own. Companies then pay search engines to use this information in ads for products and services that we have searched for. So if you search for travel information, you may see ads for airlines and hotels. This kind of advertising has proven to work better than traditional advertising.

In today’s world, people see thousands of ads every day, but they don’t take much notice. Advertisers are trying to change that by personalizing the experience of seeing an ad. So pay attention the next time you see a billboardit would be talking to you.

  24. A digital billboard can make “personal” advertising for people by_.

  A. watching people’s faces B. getting some personal information

  C. catching people’s attention D. recognizing certain human characteristics

  25. Google, which is mentioned in the third paragraph,_.

  A. has given each computer a separate identity to search websites

  B. is an example of a search engine selling information to companies

  C. has started to publish some personal advertisements on the Internet

  D. is a high-tech tool carrying modem rather than traditional advertisements

  26. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?

  A. To advise people to stop and talk to digital billboards.

  B. To remind people to choose some safe search engines.

  C. To introduce personal advertising on digital billboards.

  D. To show great concern about traditional advertisements.

  C

My car was totaled in an April accident, leading my wife and me to be car-free. We rented a car for a few weeks, thinking that after our summer travels we’d buy a new car. Our attention focused on hybrids, electrics and other environmentally friendly choices, but slowly we came to realize that there was another choice.

We decided that we would try the car-free lifestyle. September without a car was pretty easy, with good weather encouraging us to walk or bike. Metro was just fine for getting to the District, and it freed us from thinking about where to park. Sometimes after a meeting in the District, we’d take Metro to College Park. Destinations (目的地)that were two to three miles from home became walkable, and we proudly hit our daily 10,000-step goals on our iPhone apps. Destinations that were four to six miles away became biking events.

The J4 Metro bus took us from the Bethesda Metro station to the University of Maryland. It was a 50-minute ride instead of a 25-to-30-minute drive, but we could chat, email or read. On the bus, we talked with a number of different people. As October and November came and went, we felt better and better about the car-free life.

Still, we weren’t totally car-free. Uber and a taxi became important parts of our lives, getting us to more faraway destinations.

Our choices of destinations also changed. We shopped within walking distance, and we ordered items online rather than driving to a mall. We favored friendships with neighbors and those who were willing to meet us at home for dinner. Sometimes we would ask our friends for a ride to the same party or poker game.

Being car-free meant we don’t need to listen to the morning traffic reports and changing gas prices. Even with the Uber, taxi and Zipcar bills, we saved money compared with owning a car. No more car insurance bills, parking lot charges or campus parking fees.

We were surprised with how much there was to learn to go car-free; different services, iPhone apps and Uber rules. We’re proud of what we have done, and talking about it brings about conversations about other environmentally friendly solutions and encourages other people to find possible solutions that work for them.

  27. The underlined word “totaled” in Paragraph 1 probably means_.

  A. destroyed B. swapped C. checked D. trapped

  28. The car-free style has brought the writer changes except that he has_•

  A. been used to living a car-free life

  B. reduced the cost of transportation

  C. been completely cut off from long distance travelling

  D. begun to have more communication with people around

  29. In Paragraph 5,the writer talks about the change of his destinations mainly by_.

  A. telling stories B. giving examples

  C. listing reasons D. making comparisons

  30. The main idea of the passage is_.

  A. how the writer lived a low-cost life

  B. how the writer survived a car accident

  C. how the writer learned to love a car-free life

  D. how the writer found environmentally friendly solutions
