  I Am a Litter Picker!

Two years ago, I became a "litter picker".

As I walked down the hall on the last day of the school year, I watched wide-eyed as my fellow students 21 their lockers into the dustbins in front of the hall. Paper flew in all directions; broken shelves and aluminium (鋁) cans were 22 everywhere.

Looking at this scene, I came up with an idea: my school really needed a 23 programme.

I believed that one person could make a 24 -one person with initiative (主動性), 25 I wrote out my recycling plans and one morning got a pass to the schoolmaster's office. As I told her about my 26 , my heart was beating wildly.

With her agreement and encouragement, I would 27 cardboard boxes in the library, offices and classrooms to 28 papers, magazines and newspapers. In the dining room, I would use four rubbish bins to collect plastic bottles and aluminium cans.

That night, I designed a dozen 29 and planned to arrive at school early to stick them up and hand out 30 to classrooms on Monday.

But when I arrived, I was very disappointed-the night-watchman had 31 down all of the cardboard boxes I had saved. I was so upset that I expressed my anger throughout the day to anyone who would listen. I began searching for other boxes, but I met with 32 success.

A few days later, however, my English teacher took me into the new computer lab, and before my eyes sat a mountain of cardboard boxes. I am sure I was the 33 person in the world when I saw these boxes. These were the boxes that the new computers had arrived in, and they were the perfect size.

I rolled my recycling rubbish bins to the dining room, stuck up my posters, and 34 made an announcement over the loudspeaker, letting the whole school know they now had a choice about what would happen to their unwanted papers, cans and bottles.

Since that day, recycling has become part of everyday life at my school. Students and teachers now take active steps toward 35 their paper consumption (消耗) to save trees and other natural resources.

 ?、? 閱讀理解(共11小題;每小題2分,滿分22分)

  閱讀下面短文,從各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中選出最佳選項。

Annie sometimes felt puzzled by the relationship between her parents.

They never seemed to show much love for each other. Annie believed that people who were in love would show it. They would hold hands, speak sweet words to each other and give each other nice gifts. Annie's parents did none of these things. So, she doubted whether they really loved each other.

It was Annie's plan to ask her parents about their feelings for each other. But it was hard to find the right moment. One Saturday afternoon, she noticed that her dad was in the garage, doing some work on the engine of his sports car.

Annie's dad was always in a good mood when he was near his sports car, so she decided to ask him the question that had been bothering her." Dad, do you and Mom really love each other?"

"Of course," her father replied. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, you never seem to show it."

Annie's father was silent for a while, he spoke again. "Look at the engine of this car," he said. "It is oily and messy, and the car looks much better when the hood (引擎罩) is down. Don't you agree?" Without waiting for a reply, he went on. "If I took out the engine and put the hood back down, the car would look just as beautiful, right? But it wouldn't be a car anymore. The engine is its beating heart. You don't usually see it, but it has to be there. It's the same with your Mom and me. Our love for each other is the beating heart of this family. Don't worry just because it isn't on show all the time. "

About six months later, Annie's father lost his job. The family had to cut back on many things to make ends meet. And he had to sell his beloved sports car. But Annie noticed another change. Because he had more free time, her father spent more of it with her mother. They seemed to grow closer together, and showed their love more often. Their love, which Annie had been afraid did not exist, was plain to see. Annie was sad that the sports car had gone, but at least she understood what her father had told her that day.

  36. How did Annie feel about her parents' relationship at the beginning of the article?

  A. Confused. B. Angry. C. Satisfied. D. Proud.

  37. What did Annie's father compare his love to?

  A. A job. B. A story. C. A gift. D. An engine.

  38. What happened to the love between Annie's parents after her father lost his job?

  A. It no longer existed. B. It became easier to see.

  C. It grew weaker. D. It changed completely.

  39. What is the main idea of the article?

  A. Children should pay attention to parents' love.

  B. It's not good to show the feelings on the outside.

  C. Love may not be seen, but it doesn't mean it isn't there.

  D. We don't truly appreciate what we have until it is gone.

  B

Scientists have learned a great deal in the last thirty years by studying people as they sleep. They study the bodily characteristics that change during sleep. They have learned that there is one kind of sleep which causes rapid eye movement ( REM ) and another kind with no rapid eye movement (NREM).

Sleep is divided into three stages. In stage one, when you start to go to sleep, you have a pleasant floating feeling. In stage two, you sleep more deeply, and a noise will probably not wake you up. In stage three, the brain waves are less active. This third stage is when you dream, REM tends to signal that we are dreaming. For the rest of the night, you alternate between REM and NREM sleep.

Sleep is a biological need, but your brain never really sleeps. The things that are on your mind during the day are still there at night. They appear as dreams. Researchers say that normal people may have four or five REM periods of dreaming each night. The first one may begin only a half hour after they fall asleep, and the final one may last up to an hour. Nightmares (a frightening dream) usually happen toward the early morning.

Besides dreaming, snoring is also common in one's sleep. People snore because they have trouble breathing while they are asleep. Some snorers have a condition called apnea. They stop breathing up to thirty or forty times an hour because the throat muscles relax too much and block the airway. After a period of time, the brain will signal the person to start breathing again. During this time a person will snore. This is a dangerous condition, because once the brain is without oxygen for four minutes there could be serious brain damage. Sleep apnea can also cause irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, and a general lack of energy.

What should you do if you have trouble sleeping? Lots of people take sleeping pills, but these are dangerous because they can be addictive. Doctors say the best thing is to try to relax and to avoid bad habits.

Sleep is important to humans. In an average lifetime, 220, 000 hours are spent sleeping, so we need to understand everything we can about sleep. Sweet dreams!

  40. Sleep is a(an) ________ need for humans.

  A. emotional B. mental C. biological D. psychological

  41. Which of the following conditions is NOT caused by sleep apnea?

  A. A heart attack. B. A lack of energy.

  C. Irregular heartbeats. D. High blood pressure.

  42. We can learn from the article that ____________.

  A. our brains can get a good rest when we are asleep

  B. it's impossible to stop the habit of taking sleeping pills

  C. REM and NREM are ways to see if people are in a deep sleep.

  D. in stage two people will probably not wake up if they hear a noise.

  43. Where is the article probably from?

  A. A sports guidebook.

  B. A health magazine.

  C. A fashion website.

  D. A news report.

  C

An ancient philosopher felt: be content with what you have; be pleased about the way things are. When you realize that, the whole world belongs to you.

When we can be grateful for what we have, and take our focus off what we think we are short of, it's amazing how our feelings will shift to a place of peace and happiness. The reason for "an attitude of thankfulness" isn't necessarily so that God can hear our appreciation, but perhaps so that we can live happily and peacefully, with a feeling of "all is well".

Have you ever experienced this-the feeling that "what is" is great, and there is no need to wish for things to be different? It's a wonderful feeling and a great way to go through life.

Here's an example: We have strong winds in the desert at times, and the other day the high winds broke three arms on the beautiful mimosa tree in my back yard. The tree's arms are twisted and the leaves and flowers are dying. It looks hurt and brown.

Well, that's certainly one way to choose to look at it, And if I choose that way, then I can allow myself to get upset that the tree has been hurt, that there will be less shade in the yard, that I have to cut up and pull away the branches, etc. OR I can choose to see that "all is well" –that nature does what it does, that trees will lose branches, that the yard is not a static thing, but it is alive. In other words, I can choose to be okay with "what is".

Either way, the tree situation hasn't changed-I've simply changed how I choose to interpret it. My interpretation then affects my emotions, my state of peacefulness, my happiness with things, etc.

When I choose to be content with "what is", to be pleased about the way things are, and to see that nothing is missing, that everything is just fine, then I choose to be at peace. Suddenly, the whole world looks beautiful. Instead of seeing problems, I see reality. I see "what is" and I am okay with it.

Try seeing everything and accepting everything just the way it is. And watch the world open up to you.

  44. What's the best title for the article?

  A. We Value Life B. We Love Nature

  C. We Better Ourselves D. We Lack Nothing

  45. The underlined word "static" in Paragraph 5 means

  A. unbelieving B. unchanging

  C. unseeing D. unknowing

  46. What best characterizes the writer's attitude toward life?

  A. I choose to forget everything that makes me upset.

  B. I choose to look at the glass as half-empty.

  C. I choose to be grateful for my blessings.

  D. I choose to focus on what satisfies me.

Space tourism is the term used to describe space travel for entertaining purposes. What was once only a dream-described in books such as Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey—is now becoming a reality.

Futurologists are scientists who attempt to develop predictions of what life will be like in the future. After the first man landed on the moon in 1969, they thought that hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000. Futurologists also considered the possibility that, in the 21 st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions has come true yet—but the rapid development of technology may mean these predictions are a possibility in the years to come.

Space Adventures is currently the only company to have succeeded in sending paying passengers into space. Space Adventures worked with the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to offer flights for the world's first private space explorers. Each person paid over million for their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.

Following several successful explorations into space, several companies are now considering the possibility of enabling tourists to visit space. In order to make it more affordable, suborbital space travel is being considered by many companies, including Virgin Galactic. Passengers would be transported to a height of between 100-160km above earth, experience 3-6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars before being taken back down to earth. This is expected to cost around 0, 000 per person.

While it could be an enriching experience, there are some disadvantages to space tourism. Many critics (評論家) have commented that a huge growth in the spaceflight industry could drastically speed up the process of global warming. In addition, space travel is only really a possibility for the super-rich. Although Virgin Galactic claims to be "opening space to the rest of us", there are still millions' of people worldwide who wouldn't be able to afford it.

  III. 閱讀理解(共4小題;每小題2分,滿分8分)

  閱讀下面短文,從各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中選出最佳選項。

As a high school dropout myself, I often feel it is my duty to defend my fellow non-scholars. Common wisdom would have you believe we are the "bad kids", the future criminals, the worst sort of people. But not all dropouts will deal drugs, shoplift, or even shoot pool all day.

My own favorite hooky hangout was always the public library. My early retirement meant that at last I had the time to read everything I wanted to.

Best of all was the time I finally had to myself. I felt uncontrolled and free. I had been in school nearly my whole life. I wanted to find out for myself who I was, and until I did, everything else felt like a waste of time.

To be honest, though, my daily life as a dropout consisted mostly of long hot baths, afternoon naps, and microwave food. After nearly three years of such self-centered pleasure, a series of strange thoughts began to enter my mind continuously.

Images of myself at the age of 35-still living at home, collecting dust balls on the couch, reading the same book over and over-began to bother me in my sleep. And a voice in my head began asking over and over, "Who is paying the hot water bills? Who buys the microwave pizza?"

The answer, of course, was my poor old parents. Sure, I was having a wonderful time doing plenty of nothing, discovering myself and all, but they were getting a raw deal. What parents long to see their child drop out of school, with no plans for the future? Could they be expected to support me forever?

Certainly not. I had been visited by Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility, and there was no looking back. I immediately moved out of the house and out of town, in search of a future for myself.

And it is here, in my new home of San Francisco, that I have decided to do what was once unthinkable: go back to school. I plan to take adult education classes and get me GED (General Educational Development), and then enroll in City College.

So next time you see a dropout, that unchangeable anti-student, be understanding. And please don't push him to do something he doesn't want to do. It never works. He'll come around when he's ready.

  1. Which question is NOT answered in the article?

  A. When did the writer leave school?

  B. How was the writer's life as a dropout?

  C. What future plans did the writer have in San Francisco?

  D. What did the writer's parents say when he dropped out?

  2. The writer went back to school because __________.

  A. he wanted to learn something and support himself

  B. he found the life as a dropout was very unbearable

  C. his parents couldn't support him anymore

  D. he didn't want to be looked down upon

  3. What do we know about the writer from the article?

  A. He didn't like studying. B. He had a busy life as a dropout.

  C. He was concerned about his future. D. He wanted to become a teacher.

  4. The writer writes this article mainly to _________.

  A. explain why he became a dropout B. tell people how to treat dropouts

  C. prove that not all dropouts are bad D. show what a dropout's life is really like
