Alexis was hot and tired. With rage in her voice she shouted, “Pull me up! I give up, I hate this. This is stupid!” It was at that moment when Jason, the adviser on the trip, looked at me and said, “Ed, I'm going to go down and talk with her.” I then shouted down to Alexis, “Hold on! You can do this. We know you can!”

Jason grasped another rope, put his climbing harness(系帶)on and began to repel down the cliff. Within moments Jason was beside Alexis. She had her cheek directly against the face of the rock with her feet barely resting on a small piece of the cliff that jetted outward. Jason said to Alexis, “I know that you have been on this cliff now for what seems like a long time. Your feet and fingers are cramping(痙攣)up and your forearms feel as though they are on fire. But, Alexis, you are strong, look how far up you are already. You have taken one of the more difficult paths up the cliff. Look Alexis, look at the path you have taken.”

At that moment, Alexis moved her cheek away from the rock face and looked down. The bright white chalk she used on her hands to give her a better hold, showed the path where her tired hands had moved her upward on the cliff. Jason was right. Alexis had taken the hardest way up the cliff. Jason then looked straight into Alexis' eyes and in a calm voice he said, “You are not alone out here, there are people who care about you, who want to help you and see you succeed. We are going to do this together. Are you ready?” Slowly she shook her head yes and took a deep breath.

Let's face it.No one drinks diet sodas for the taste.People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it.Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas.“What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,”said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.

Nutrition expert,Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all.“We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,”said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain?No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑)raised blood sugar levels in some mice.“Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,”said Helen P.Hazuda, professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas.“They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”

  25. People drink diet sodas to________.

A.enjoy its taste B.stay in fashion

C.achieve weight loss D.gain more energy

  26. We can learn from the passage that________.

A.regular sodas make people lose more weight

C.diet sodas do help reduce calories

D.most blood diseases come from diet sodas

  27. The underlined word“They” in the last paragraph probably refers to“________”.

  A.sweeteners

  B.diet sodas and artificial sweeteners

  C.sodas

D.diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees;another gets the shade”,and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and daughter is sometimes confusing. If close, the relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include the hierarchy (等級) and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.

Marina,27 years old, says,“I love spending time with my mom,but I wouldn't consider her my best friend.Best friends don't pay for your wedding.Best friends don't remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life!Best friends don't tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn't mean that the mother and daughter relationship can't be very close and satisfying.

While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common which increases the likelihood of shared companionship.Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions.Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and technology, which may bring them even closer together.

Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if they aren't speaking for some unfortunate reason. The mother and daughter relationship is still closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship.Daughters should not feel responsible for their mothers' emotional well-being.It isn't that they don't care deeply about their mothers. It's just that they shouldn't be burdened with their mother's well-being.

The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other.Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness.Mother always “trumps” friends.

28.The underlined word “preclude” in Paragraph 1 probably means“ ”.

  A.differ B.prevent

  C.benefit D.change

29.Why do many mothers and adult daughters keep a rewarding relationship?

A.Because they have a lot of common interests.

B.Because they have common family values.

C.Because they have no generation gap.

D.Because they keep a constant relationship.

30.What do we know from the passage?

A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.

B.A mother's love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.

C.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends' friendship.

D.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.

31.What is the best title for the passage?

A.How to be a good mother and daughter?

  B.Who is a mother's best friend?

C.A friend in need is a friend indeed

  D.Can a mother be a daughter's best friend?

  D

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?

Mothers who feel their children don't appreciate them can add another grievance to the list half the time, their children are lying to them. A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations. Still, mums should feel better than total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77% of the time.

Bella Depaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked 77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whether they lied at any time. DePaulo named lying broadly, as “when you intentionally try to mislead someone”, so she would catch the smallest of lies.

The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost rather than so that they would send him extra money. Female students constantly told their plainlooking roommates that they were pretty. “They are everyday lies,” says DePaulo.

DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to. College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time. In close relationships, people were more likely to tell “kindhearted” lies, designed to protect feelings, rather than selfserving lies.

Romantic(浪漫的) partners lie somewhere between close friends and acquaintances. Students lied to romantic partners about a third of the time. DePaulo thinks that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.

Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little interaction with them.

32.What is the meaning of the underlined word “grievance” in Paragraph 1?

  A.Belief. B.Opinion. C.Complaint. D.Difficulty.

33.According to the passage, college students felt closest to ________.

  A.mothers B.best friends

  C.acquaintances D.romantic partners

34.Female students lied to their roommates to ________.

A.get money from them B.offer them the services

C.gain more security D.make them happy

35.What is the purpose of this article?

  A.To present a fact.

  B.To argue an idea.

  C.To tell a story.

  D.To explain a theory.
