If you’re heading to Nantucket or the South of France this August, we envy you. But if you’re trying to book an affordable, last-minute summer getaway(放假)that won’t be crowded with tourists, here are several helpful ideas.

  OGUNQUIT, MAINE

A summer vacation in the Northeast can cost a pretty penny, but this Maine coastal town is more affordable than touristy spots like Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport...and it’s just as attracting. Here, you’ll find one of the most wonderful public beaches in the country, starting at about 5 per night.

  BOGOTA, COLOMBIA

Cartagena has experienced a huge increase in tourism over the past years. But Bogotá,the often-forgotten Colombian capital city, is also due for a comeback. Now safe for travel, Bogotá has an exciting arts scene, striking Colonial architecture and top-level restaurants on a par with many European destinations. Crowds die down when the annual carnival(狂歡節(jié))ends the first week of August, and round-trip flights dip to about 0.

  KEY WEST, FLORIDA

Yes, it’s hot. But don’t be so quick to overlook Florida as a summer vacation spot. In August, you’ll find super-affordable rates(the Pier House Resort &Spa is only 5 per night)and fewer crowds and tourists.

  ISLA HOLBOX, MEXICO

In Holbox, Mexico’s best-kept secret, you won’t find five-star hotels, good restaurants or even many cars. Book a last-minute trip now to kick it in a hammock(吊床),swinging between palm trees and seafood shacks serving up freshly caught grilled lobster and fish. Oh, and did we mention it’s cheap? A round-trip ticket from NYC to Cancun is only about 0.

  21. Which spot of the following is more affordable?

  A. Bar Harbor B. Kennebunkport C. Ogunquit D. Key West

  22. The underlined phrase “on a par with” in Paragraph 3 refers to___.

  A. equal to B. different from C. next to D. opposite to

  23. Where should you go if you want to visit Colonial architecture?

  A. Holbox B. CancunKey C. West D. Bogotá

  24. What do these four destinations have in common?

  A. They are all coastal towns.

  B. None of them are expensive and overcrowded.

  C. They all belong to US.

  D. They all serve up fresh lobster shacks.

  B

I left home to support my sister in her efforts to present a music festival. She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her, not wanting to leaveand feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However, I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister.

So I boarded the plane in mid-August, and hated the long flight. I arrived, tired and hungry. I had left my husband of 2 years, alone, in our old New Orleans house.

I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festivalon Sunday morningwhen I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me, that he would be just fine, and not to worry.

As the day wore on, I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN, that New Orleans was under water.

I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded. I left the stage and went straight to the TV. I saw the street sign near my home, of Humanity Street, but nothing below it, except water.

In the days that followed, I found out that my house, my car, my clothes, my furniture, everything that I’d left behind was gone…but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保險杠)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack, in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans, half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.

By the first week of September, I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband. Since then, our relationship has grown deeper; we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational, spirit-filled community.

  25. Why did the author leave home?

  C. To watch a performance. D. To visit her husband’s cousin.

Attempts to protect the Great Barrier Reef are failing. A report released on Monday by the government in Australia says water quality in the Great Barrier Reef is far below what it should be.

The report assessed the condition of the reef between 2009 and 2014. It showed that pesticide(農(nóng)藥)and pollution have decreased, but not enough to reach environmental targets.

Sediment(沉積物)and chemicals can weaken coral, hurting its ability to feed and grow. Corals are live animals that take root in the ocean floor, but they are not plants. Reefs are hard skeletons left at the bottom of the sea by small marine creatures called polyps(息肉).The polyps then form the larger structure of a reef. Corals also are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the entire planet. They can make a home for fish, and sea snakes to name a few.

“Over that five-year period, we did see some progress towards our targets. Sediment is down 12 percent and pesticides’ loads are down 30 percent. But what is most disturbing is that these results are far from our targets. Progress towards these targets failed to improve in the period2013-2014. If one of my kids came home with a report card like this, I would be a bit disappointed. There is more bad news here than good news.” said Steve Miles.

The report also found that fewer than one-third of Queensland’s sugar plantations(種植園)used techniques to reduce the use of pesticides. Only 28 percent of land managers managed their land properly. They had reduced harmful water to protect the health of the reef. The official target is a 90 percent reduction in pesticide use within three years.

  29. What is the harm of chemical?

  A.Worsening the growth of polyps.

B.Making coral feed and grow slowly.

C.Causing fish to die out in the future.

D.Weakening the speed of coral’s growth.

  30. What can be learned from Steve Miles words?

A.He is satisfied with the protection of reef.

B.He feels angry with what his children did.

C.He thinks that the reef needs more protection.

D.He is very optimistic about reef protection.

  31. What do we know about the majority of land managers in Queensland?

A.They were tough to deal with.

B.They failed to manage their land properly.

C.They reduced the amount of harmful water.

  D. They were eager to quit pesticide soon.

  D

The biggest criticism(批評) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen etal. found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships. They also found that our online friendships actually allow us to have discussions with a much more diverse set of people than in the real world and improve our psychological happiness.

However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.

Professor Larry D. Rosen, in his book iDisorder, presents evidence that social networking is turning us into narcissists(自戀者). He says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive, and show anti-social behavior in their offline lives. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing––empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends’ points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.

Sherry Turkle, a professor of social sciences at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title of her 2011 book, that we are simply “Alone Together.”

These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.

  32. The underlined word “unfounded” in Paragraph 1 probably means_________.

  A. undoubted B. false

  C. acceptable D. illegal

  33. In this passage, the author mainly argues that _________.

  A. internet culture causes various problems

  B. we are losing some most important emotions

  C. online friendships do good to offline friendships

  D. social networking affects young people’s personalities

  34. By the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4, Turkle probably means _________.

  A. we rely on social network for connection

  B. being alone is necessary for being together

  C. being alone makes us know ourselves better

  D. we hardly communicate while being together

  35. From the passage, we can learn that _________.

  A. we are becoming unable to understand others well

  C. young people can’t go without social media

  D. social media have more advantages

The word “pub”is the short form for“public house”in Great Britain. It is supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, horse racing,or business.Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to midnight. You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her.Perhaps that’s partly the reason why pubs depress me—they are intended mainly to provide for male interests. Most Englishmen have their favorite local pubs, where they can escape from the pressure of family life or work, and if they are lucky they tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl.Indeed,many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they always be the host of a week-long party.
