Joey was born with club feet(畸形足). The doctors convinced his parents that with treatment he would be able to walk normally – but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a problem when you saw him walk.

The children in his neighborhood ran around during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. His parents never told him he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.

In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder than others – perhaps he sensed the abilities that seemed to come naturally to others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team ran, only the top seven runners would be chosen. His parents didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team. So he didn’t know.

He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day – even the day he had a fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit. His mother was worried, so she went to look for him after school. She found him running all alone. The sweat ran down his face. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. His parents never told him he couldn’t run four miles with a high fever. So he didn’t know.

Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were posted. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. His parents never told him he shouldn’t expect to make the team. They never told him he couldn’t do it. So he didn’t know. He just did it.

  24. What can we know about Joey as a child?

  A. He couldn’t walk normally at 8.

  B. He admired other kids for running.

  C. The born disability made him anxious.

  D. He received much medical treatment.

  A. Sympathetic and anxious.

  B. Optimistic and encouraging.

  C. Disapproving with much self-blame.

  D. Supportive with little expectation.

  26. Why didn’t Joey’s parents tell him the truth?

  A. To avoid setting limits to his potential.

  B. For fear he couldn’t make the team.

  C. To encourage him to run like other kids.

  D. In case he would be looked down upon.

  27. The reason why the author repeats “So he didn’t know.”is_________________

  A. to draw a conclusion.

  B. to show the author’s emotion.

  C. to help the story develop.

  D. to arouse readers’ interest.

Since 1984, Philadelphia has been cleaning up its act. One by one, graffiti(涂鴉)-covered walls are being changed into outdoor art. So far, more than 1,800 murals (壁畫) have been painted. Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city.

The walls that were once ugly with graffiti are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens are very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia's Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP's artistic director. "When people ask me what our program is about," she says, "I answer them with one word: hope." Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some one-time graffiti writers even help paint MAP murals.

The MAP’s work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community (社區(qū)). When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been "Safe Streets," "Love and Care," and "Peace Walk."

The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals. "The making of a mural enters people's collective memory as an extraordinary, pleasant moment in neighborhood history" says Golden, who began as a muralist in Los Angeles.

How to Write a Letter to Parents

As a teacher, one of the most difficult parts of your job is working with parents. With proper communication, however, you can build bridges between the school and home. 36

If you do it properly, this is an excellent way to communicate when you cannot meet with parents face to face.

·Put positive communication in the letter, even if you are writing to discuss a problem.

37 Even if it is difficult, you must find this positive spin, because it will make the parents more open to what you have to discuss. The general rule is “start with the good, hit them with the bad, then end on a positive note”.

  · 38_ Express your concern and desire to help. Do not place it completely on their shoulders, as they may resent(厭惡)this action. Show them through the letter that you want to work with them to find a solution.

·Ask for a response. You can ask them to write back, sign a part of the letter or give you a call. 39 Be caring, but make sure they got the communication. Remember, your goal is to work together to help their child succeed.

·Consider mailing the letter to the parent, rather than sending it home with the student. Some students will intentionally forget to give the letter to their parents, while others will accidentally or purposely lose the letter. 40

  A. Writing a letter to parents is one way to do this.

  B. If you do not hear from them, you should call them

  C. Share the problem with the parents.

  D. Respect parents and never quarrel with them.

  E. Whenever you meet with problems, you should keep cool.

  F. Sending it in the mail makes it more certain that it will be received.

  G. You can do this by pointing out a gain the child has made recently.

  Ⅵ.書面表達(dá):

  One possible version:

  Dear fellow students,

Recently I have found many of us students spend too much time sending short messages or playing games on cell phones, which has negative effects on our studies and also does harm to our eyes. Worse still, we have little time to communicate with our parents and friends. Nor do we have time for physical exercise.

What shall we do to improve the situation? All of us should be fully aware of the harmful effects of frequent use of cell phones. To begin with, let's limit our time of playing with cell phones and start other hobbies. What's more, we should spend more time playing sports, which is beneficial to us. Besides, communicating with our friends is also a good choice to help us relax and get rid of the addiction. I hope that my suggestions will be of help to you.

Let’s put down our cell phones and focus on what is happening around us !

  Let's take action now!

That’s all. Thank you for your listening.
