I have always been brimming with questions about the how and why of the world around me. In fact, one of my biology teachers once commented in response to my constant questioning that I was an extremely curious student and a pleasure to have in class.
When in the 8th grade we began studying the three sciences independently, I developed a special affinity towards biology and chemistry. Medicine was the first thought that came to mind when I thought about a career in Biology and Chemistry but I could not foresee myself working in a clinic on a day to day basis. I was then introduced to my first Robin Cook book, ‘Fever’, the first of many to follow. It was then that I realised how dependent the medical community is on research and that there are a myriad career options that are open to a research scientist.
Being a student of the International Baccalaureate program, I got a lot of exposure to laboratory work which I thoroughly enjoyed. The International Baccalaureate encourages its students to question knowledge and test theories for themselves, an approach which suited me perfectly. The interdisciplinary approach of the program to science helped me broaden my perspective of the scope of research and crystallised my decision to study a course in molecular biochemistry. India is on the threshold of becoming a world leader in clinical research, however, the fact still remains that the leadership in innovative research still lies in the hands of scientists trained in the universities of Europe is what prompted me to apply to the your university.
What amazes me about this line of study is how all living organisms whether complex or simple ultimately are a collection of cells, entities so tiny and yet so powerful that they determine the nature of the organism. DNA is nothing more than a chemical compound but what is it that gives it the capability to determine the characteristics of an organism? How is it that cells communicate using chemistry? What molecular activity determines the genetic makeup of a species? The wide range of interrelated modules offered by your university will lay a strong foundation before I narrow down the scope of my education.
My love and appreciation of nature’s mysteries has been strengthened through numerous treks, camps and equestrian training and has found application to this field of study.
Your university’s state of the art research facilities are what attracted me to apply to your undergraduate course since the line of study and work that I plan to follow requires just that. The opportunity to meet and interact with the eminent scientists who are members of the faculty is something I really look forward to.
My tenure as Head Girl and years in boarding school have honed my organisational and communication skills and developed a sense of team spirit and responsibility which will aid my academic and personal interactions at university. Being in an international environment will contribute to the shaping of my ideas on moral issues like the ethics of cloning and stem cell research which need to be addressed by the research fraternity, of which I aspire to become a part. I realise that the program requires commitment and hard work and assure you that I will make a positive contribution to your department/it. I hope to have the opportunity to interact with other international and local students to further my interest in drama and theatre, my passion for music and my love for sports. It would be a privilege to be an active and involved member of the student community and to study at your university.

1.美國院校偏好來自一些國內(nèi)頂尖大學出生的申請者,由于他們?nèi)ッ绹髮W后表現(xiàn)大多都很優(yōu)秀,因而美國學校就會比較注重招這些學生。
當然申請者專業(yè)背景的相關性與申請難易程度也有著緊密的聯(lián)系。在申請研究生時,首先要考慮的是自己的研究方向與申請方向是否匹配,其次與套磁教授的研究方向是否相關。所以在選校以及套磁教授的選擇時,最注重的還是專業(yè)匹配度。
2.申請者的硬件水平GPA、GT成績和獎學金等學術情況就成為了較直觀的反映。一般來說,專業(yè)GPA的影響力高于綜合GPA,本科階段的GPA比研究生階段的GPA更具影響力。
專業(yè)前50的學校的研究生院通常要求:GPA起碼要3.5(B+)以上;GREV+Q>325,部分學校的物理系要求PhysicalSub成績,對于GREsub學校更加注重Percentage而不單是分數(shù);IBT>100。
其后的學校通常要求:GPA>3.0(B),但是錄取學生的平均GPA一般也在3.3(B+)左右;GREV+Q>315以上;IBT>90,但是從近幾年的競爭情況看,IBT還是盡量要考到90以上才能在激烈的競爭中不容易被輕易擠掉,而且也有更多希望拿Assistantship獎學金,畢竟國際學生拿Fellowship的機會很少。
3.申請者的論文、研究經(jīng)歷和工作經(jīng)歷方面。研究經(jīng)歷可以說是申請PhD必需的,而且工作/實習經(jīng)歷在美國學校看來也是豐富閱歷、幫助申請者明確了發(fā)展方向的重要經(jīng)歷。而專業(yè)論文則是研究經(jīng)歷中的內(nèi)容和專業(yè)研究水平的具體表現(xiàn),比簡歷中的簡要描述更有說服力。
美國留學物理學專業(yè)分類
1、原子物理
研究高溫等離子圍觀過程、原子分子團簇的結構、光譜和碰撞過程、激光與物質(zhì)的相互作用、分子納米等。
2、生物物理學
屬交叉學科,是運用物理學的理論、技術和方法,研究生命物質(zhì)的物理性質(zhì)、生命過程的物理和物理化學規(guī)律,以及物理因素對生物系統(tǒng)作用機制的科學。研究內(nèi)容一般涉及量子生物物理、分子生物物理、細胞生物物理和復雜體系的生物物理幾部分。
3、凝聚態(tài)物理
研究凝聚態(tài)物質(zhì)結構和組成粒子(如原子、離子、分子、電子等)之間相互作用與運動的規(guī)律,并闡述其性能和用途。是中國學生主要申請的專業(yè)方向之一。
4、宇宙學
將宇宙作為一個整體來研究的科學統(tǒng)稱為宇宙學。
5、高能物理學
又稱粒子物理學或基本粒子物理學,研究比原子核更深層次的微觀世界中物質(zhì)的結構性質(zhì),和在很高的能量下這些物質(zhì)相互轉(zhuǎn)化的現(xiàn)象,以及產(chǎn)生這些現(xiàn)象的原因和規(guī)律。
6、計算物理學
計算機科學、計算數(shù)學與物理之間的新興邊緣學科,是公認的與理論物理、實驗物理并列的物理學第三大支柱。
7、天體物理和天文學
運用物理、數(shù)學、化學等方面的理論和方法研究宇宙中天體的起源、演化和死亡。一般分為實測天體物理和理論天體物理,前者指天體的觀測方法和觀測手段,觀測結果的處理和分析等,后者是對觀測結果進行物理解釋,研究天體目標的物理、化學和運動特性。
8、光學物理
包括量子光學,非線型光學,高分辨率光譜學等方向。
9、應用物理
將物理學 運用在光通信與光信息科學、物理電子學與光電子領域內(nèi),以納米材料和器件、光電子器件,微電子,物理電子學以及電子技術為主。
