When I got out of the car, it was still dark in the morning. I walked alone. “It must be here.” But there was nothing to see.

After a while, a man came to me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked.

He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he answered, “you’ll get there in five minutes.”

Finally, I came to some rocks. I looked carefully over them, but it was still too dark to see anything.

Suddenly, the rain stopped. The sun got up. I found myself on the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world.

I looked down to the Colorado River about 2 kilometers below me. If you put the three tallest buildings in the world at the bottom of the canyon, they still won’t reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. How far is it? It’s 20 kilometres, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon was missing into the distance … over 400 kilometres long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge!

Some people have disabilities. This means that they cannot do some things that other people are able to do. Sometimes it can be hard for them to do everyday activities.

There are laws that make sure disabled people are treated fairly. Unluckily not everyone follows these laws.

One law says that people with disabilities must be able to easily get into buildings and other places. This means that special ramps (斜坡) must be built so people in wheelchairs can get in. It is also said that new things being built cannot block access (通道) for the disabled.

One man feels unhappy because he feels he is not being treated fairly. He is in a wheelchair. He lives in a building, but the owners of the building put a gate up. The gate blocks the only wheelchair ramp. The disabled man can no longer easily get to his home. When he wants to get to his house, he has to get someone to let him in. This is very difficult for his life and this makes him very unhappy. He says that he is going to remove (移除) the gate so he can easily get home.

The owners of the building say that the y are working with their lawyers on it. They say they will come up with a way that will be fair for everyone.

  44. Which of the following is true?

  A. Buildings mustn’t put up gates.

  B. Buildings mustn’t be too high for the disabled.

  C. Buildings must be easy for the disabled to enter.

  D. Buildings must be built for everyday activities.

  45. Why did the writer give the example of the disabled man?

  A. To ask people to help the man.

  B. To let us know life is hard for the man.

  C. To show us the man’s neighbours are not kind.

  D. To tell us not everyone follows the laws for the disabled.

  46. What will the neighbours do about the thing?

  A. They’ll say sorry to the man. B. They’ll remove the gate for the man.

  C. They’ll find a way fair for everyone. D. They’ll build another ramp for the man.

  C

Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photographs,

films, radio and television. Why read a description of something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?

Photography was certainly a wonderful invention (發(fā)明). Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全書), for example, is always better when it has good illustrations (插圖). But we also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different kinds of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.

In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent feature film. Reading a novel needs imagination (想象). Each of us imagines a story differently.

Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also has interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.

Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as humans. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.

  47. According to Paragraph 2, photographs can give us ______.

  A. all the information about things

  B. the wrong information about things

  C. enough information about people and places

  D. some information about things but not enough

  48. What does the underlined word “advantages” mean in Chinese?

  A. 優(yōu)勢(shì) B. 用途 C. 靈感 C. 收獲

  49. What does the writer think about reading?

  A. It is a wonderful invention. B. It needs some skills.

  C. It is an important part of our lives. D. It is as important as television.

  50. What’s the best title for the passage?

  A. Is Reading for Information or for Fun? B. Is Reading Important Today?

  C. How can We Become a Good Reader? D. Are Reading Habits Important for Reading?

  Help the beach

Tony has always loved going to the beach. He spends as much time there as he can.

One day, Tony and his parents took their beach gear (兩棲登陸裝備) and headed to the shore. It was a bright, sunny day.

The beach was full by the time they got there. It seemed that everyone had the same idea that day. When they found a place, Tony sat down and began to enjoy the sun, the sand and the water.

Soon Tony noticed something strange. There was a water bottle in the sand. Then, a paper bag was blowing down by the water. People had littered all over the beach!

His mum explained to the unhappy boy that a lot of people littered instead of using rubbish bins. If Tony wanted it to stop, he would have to work to save the beach.

Tony worked hard. He got a group to help clean up. He put up signs and got his town to put more rubbish bins in the areas. Most of all, he let people know how bad littering was for the environment.

Tony worked hard to make a difference!

  66. Who did Tony go to the beach with?

  67. How did Tony feel when he saw the rubbish all over the beach?

  68. Will you do as Tony did if you see rubbish everywhere in public places? Why or Why not?
