Kida in primary schools in Bellaire, Ohio, have something to sing about. For the past eight years, public primary schools in that town didn’t offer music classes. They didn’t have the money to pay for them. But the school district got some support to bring back music this school year.

Many school officials across the country say music classes get students excited about going to school. And studies have shown that music classes may boost brainpower. For example, researchers from the University of Southern California recently released the results of a five-year study. They found that the brains of 10-and 11-year-olds who learned to play a musical instrument developed faster than the brains of kids who didn’t.

Though most people aren’t against teaching music in schools, not everyone says it’s necessary.

Many school officials argue(爭論) that learning music mean less time spent on math, writing, and science, all of which may be more useful to students later in life.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Music should be taught in school for the simple reason that it makes learning more fun. We have music classes at my school, and I love them!Taking music lessons can also build character. In 2015, a research company called Grunwald Associates did a survey on music education. More than 60 percent of parents whose kids took music classes in school said their child became more focused(集中注意力).

  ——Noah Falcon, New. Jersey

At my school, we don’t have music classes. I think that’s OK because it gives us more time to focus on main subjects, like reading and math. It’s more important to learn these subjects than it is to learn how to play an instrument or sing. If someone wanted to take music lessons, he or she could do it outside of school. I took a mariachi (墨西哥街頭樂隊音樂) class after school, so it didn’t take time away from my other classes.

  ——Sophia Salazar, California

  24. What change has happened in primary schools in Bellaire this year?

  A. Music classes are offered. B. The school year is shortened.

  C. Singing is allowed in schools. D. Kida can get prizes if they learn music.

  25. What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

  A. Create. B. Prevent. C. Discover. D. Increase.

  26. What does Noah Falcon think of music education?

  A. It is unnecessary. B. It is a waste of money.

  C. It is very important. D. It is easy to continue.

  27. What can we learn about Sophia Salazar?

  A. She didn’t like music at all. B. Music brings her more fun.

  C. Music helps her keep focused. D. She took a music class after school.

A new program encouraging children ages 9 to 12 to get interested in computers, math and science starts next week at all 36 libraries of the San Diego Public Library.

Called “Spring into STEAM,” the program will offer workshops in March, April and May . It begins on March2.

“We know that science education is so important now, and technology is changing so fast,” said Misty Jones, library director. “We see this as a way to bring kids new ideas and help them know more about the world around them.”

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and there will be workshops in each area. This year’s theme(主題) is “Bug Out!” so the science workshop will invite insect(昆蟲)experts to explain the survival skills of insects. The engineering workshop will watch bees as builders. For math, the kids will learn spatial geometry (空間幾何學(xué)) by making 3-Dpaper insects. Kids in other workshops will learn computer coding , create a light using a glass bottle, or build insects using pipe cleaners and LED lights.

Jones said she’s also excited about the chance for children to take part in the International Barcode of Life Project, which is trying to create a digital catalog(電子目錄) of different kinds of insects on Earth. Kids in San Diego can ask for free insect collection tools at their local libraries beginning on March 2. Insects they collect can then be sent in for DNA identification.

Jones said it is unusual for every library to start the same program at the same time. “It’s something we’ve been trying to do, and I think it’s just the beginning of the chances we will be able to offer,” she said.

  28. What do we know about “Spring into STEAM”?

  A. It is open to kids of all ages. B. It lasts for at lest four months.

  C. It helps kids learn more about themselves. D. It is held by the San Diego Public Library.

Most people will recognize Bill Clinton, ex-president of the United States. Bill Clinton is a very popular speech giver and regularly gives talks all over the world, to many different audiences. He is so effective at giving talks because he has a special quality which we call “charisma (魅力)”.

Nowadays, psychologists (心理學(xué)家) are becoming very interested in charisma and want to describe its meaning in a better way. People often misunderstand what charisma is and think of it as a kind of fame, but it is not the same as fame. Charisma is a kind of magic and is relatively rare. A well-known American psychologist thinks that charismatic people are basically excellent communicators. However, they have other qualities such as self-confidence, eloquence (口才) and vision.

Charismatic personalities are able to draw people to them, and people feel happy in their company. There is a sense of “togetherness” when a charismatic person is with other people. A good example of this ability, some say, is the famous American, Oprah Winfrey. She is a highly-successful businesswoman and is probably best known as the presenter of a very popular talk show. Oprah is able to relate to audiences at her shows and they respond well to her. Her charismatic personality has made her one of the richest women in the world. She owns several houses and publishes her own magazines. Presently, she is presenting a new series of the Oprah Winfrey Show. She also runs a book club, which influences the nation’s reading habits and may be one of the reasons why people are reading more these days in the USA.

A woman who had extraordinary charisma was the film star, Marilyn Monroe. A beautiful woman and a talented (有天賦的) actress, she was always the centre of attention wherever she went.

Unlike fame, charisma doesn’t disappear over time. Even now, more than fifty years after her death, when young people see Monroe in her films, her charisma seems as fresh and powerful as ever.

  32. Bill Clinton is good at giving talks because _____.

  A. he was once president of the USA B. he has a quality called charisma

  C. he has many fans that support him D. he is well-known all over the world

  33. According to the text, charismatic people _____.

  A. can easily attract and interest people B. are all effective speech makers

  C. are all confident and successful D. often try to create a calm atmosphere

  34. What do we know about Oprah Winfrey?

  A. She writes books to influence Americans’ reading habits.

  B. She often gives talks to American young people.

  C. She is most famous as a magazine publisher.

  D. She has a happy relationship with her audiences.

  35. The author mentions the popularity of Marilyn Monroe to show that _____.

  A. Monroe is an extraordinarily talented actress

  B. charisma doesn’t become weaker over time

  參考范文

  Dear editor,

I'm Li Hua, I'm writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams.

Most of us feel nervous when taking an important exam. Some feel dizzy or tired, some lose their appetites and the others even suffer from sleep problems, of which all have terrible effects on our exams.

Then how to get rid of these bad symptoms? In my opinion, first of all, it's important to have a positive attitude towards exams, as they are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our study, so there is no need to worry too much about the exam results. Study hard every day and make careful plans; and then we will reduce the pressure of exams.

Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, we shouldn't stay up too late before the exams. Having a hot bath or a cup of milk before going to bed can contribute to a sound sleep.

Pakistan should be everyone’s tourist destination for 2018, but what if you already live there?

Then perhaps you should consider visiting these five must-visit places for this year.

  Lake Saiful Muluk

At an altitude of 3, 224m, surrounded by snowy mountains, the lake rewards those that make the three-hour uphill walk from Naran. You will find the pathway just above the free market, but the best choice is to get a jeep and share the costs with some other tourists; expect to pay about 700 rupees, worth it to view this natural beauty.

  Deosai National Park

As another high point in Pakistan, it has an average altitude of 4,114m-the Deosai Plains are one of the highest plateaus (高原) in the world. If you make it to the park, you expect to find rich plants and wild animals. The breathtaking scenery on show at the plains is enough to make 2018 a memorable year.

  Naltar Valley

Accessible via a 2.5-hour drive from Gilgit, well worth visiting. Covered with pine trees and other plants, it has a dreamlike feel about it. Various colors all year around make you fall in love.

  Shangrila Resort

Right in the north of Pakistan in the central valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. Locals call this a paradise (樂園), and that’s what it feels like. No visit is complete without checking out the restaurant which is built in the structure of an aircraft.

  Rama Meadow (牧場)

Doesn’t feel like Pakistan at all, more like somewhere in Minnesota. Watch the sheep and cows feeding while clear water flows in streams from high in the mountains. Against Chongra’s ice-covered peak, this little meadow is a piece of art.

  21. What is the best means to go to Lake Saiful Muluk?

  C. Choose an uphill walk from Naran.

Georgina, known as Georgie, will turn 16 later this week and organized the party with two friends. Her mother said they had originally looked at the choice of booking a nightclub, but decided the £ 1,000 fee was too expensive. She said, “It seemed that realistically the only place Georgina could have her party was at home.”

Georgie’s parents had grown-ups to be in charge, a proper guest list, and a ban on alcohol. So they thought they had her 16th birthday party under control. Unfortunately, it was advertised on Facebook.

Around 400 uninvited guests stormed into the family’s townhouse in Brighton on Saturday and gatecrashed (擅自參加) the event. They violently forced their way past the adults on duty, breaking light bulbs, knocking over plants and tearing up the garden. Twelve police cars had to be called in to send them on their way. The troublemakers were the Facebook Republican Army, a group who look for teenage parties to crash through social networking sites.

Yesterday Georgie’s mother, Sylvia Meli, said to the newspaper reporter, “It was an absolute horror show. The garden has been ruined and the grass is just mud. I’ll never have a party for my daughter here again. I think Facebook is a major cause, as well as texting.”

A gatecrasher said this is just the kind of party they like to gatecrash. They’re in their late teens and early 20s and they are quite intimidating. When they turn up at a teenage party they know that no one will dare to say anything to them so they can do what they want. Once they’ve found a party they put the word out through texts and news spreads fast.

A Sussex police spokesman said, “There was a sea of people, and it was difficult to move, which was a major safety problem that required a lot of police time and resources.” Mrs Meli added, “I do understand at that age they have nowhere to go because they couldn’t go to clubs. But invading someone else’s party and wasting police time and money is not the answer.”

  24. What made Georgie’s parents give up holding the party at a nightclub?

  A. The limited time. B. The high cost.

  C. The safety problem. D. The noisy atmosphere.

  25. What can we know about Georgie’s mother?

  A. She regretted holding the party at home.

  B. She has disadvantaged backgrounds.

  C. She arranged the party with Georgie.

  D. She throws a birthday party for Georgie yearly.

  26. What does the underlined word “intimidating” in Paragraph 5 mean?

  A. Ambitious. B. Curious. C. Enthusiastic. D. Frightening.

  27. What’s Mrs. Meli’s attitude towards the Facebook Republican Army?

  A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.

The times are changing. On Thursday October 13th, 2016, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, marking the first time the highly-eyed-on literary (文學(xué)的)award has gone to someone who is mainly seen as a musician, and leading to heated discussions.

The 75-year-old won the prize “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, the Swedish Academy said.

“For 54 years he has been at it, reinventing himself,” said Sara Danius, the academy’s permanent secretary. “Bob Dylan writes poetry for the ear. But it’s perfectly fine to read his works as poetry.”

And while many Dylan’s fans have found great delight at the news, others online and in the literary community are angry with the Committee, saying the award has skipped over fiction writers for the second year.

New York Times Book Review editor Pamela Paul said it was good news but pointed out how many “deserving” novelists there are.

Director Martin Scorsese put out a statement saying he was “overjoyed” that Dylan was awarded the prize.

“Dylan’s poetry, his musical genius, has meant so much to me personally and to generations of people around the world,” Scorsese said. “His work has influenced and shaped culture, and he has never stopped exploring and growing as an artist. The Nobel Committee has given Dylan a form of recognition that fits his role in our culture—in world culture.”

Dylan won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for his “great influence on popular music and American culture”. He’s the first American to win the literary Nobel since Toni Morrison in 1993.

  28. Why does Bob Dylan’s winning the Nobel Prize cause heated discussions?

  A. He is 75 years old.

  B. He reinvents himself.

  C. He is known as a musician.

  D. He created poetic expressions.

  29. What can we know about Dylan according to Martin Scorsese?

  A. Dylan influences Martin a lot.

  B. Dylan is happy with the award.

  C. Dylan is a poet rather than a musician.

  D. Dylan benefits a lot from world culture.

  30. Who is the first American to win Nobel Literature Prize in history?

  A. Bob Dylan. B. Sara Danius.

  C. Martin Scorsese. D. Toni Morrison.

  31. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. A brief introduction to Bob Dylan.

  B. The reason for Bob Dylan’s success.

  C. Different views on Bob Dylan’s winning the Nobel Prize.

  D. Bob Dylan’s great influence on American culture.

Four years ago, we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no waiting in lines and no checkout? Or could we create a physical store where customers could simply take what they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go, where you could experience the idea of “just walk out shopping”.

Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology, so you never have to wait in line. With our “just walk out shopping” experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout.

Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our “just walk out technology” automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in your virtual cart (虛擬購物車). When you’ve done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt (收據(jù)).

We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. Our selection of foodstuff ranges from bread and milk to cheeses and locally made chocolates. You’ll find well-known brands we love, plus special finds we’re excited to introduce to customers. For a quick home-cooked dinner, pick up one of our chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, and you can make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.

Our 1,800-square-foot shopping space is conveniently compact (緊湊的), so busy customers can get in and out fast. It is located at 2131, 7th Ave, Seattle, WA, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Blanchard Street. All you need is an Amazon account, a supported smart phone, and the free Amazon Go app.

  32. How can customers take away the products in Amazon Go?

  A. Ordering in advance. B. Paying by their credit card.

  C. Using the Amazon Go app. D. Opening their own account.

Solar energy, which comes from the sun’s rays, is used for electricity, hot water, and cooking. The sun’s rays come from the faraway sun. When traveling a long way and entering the earth’s atmosphere, it becomes dilute (稀薄的). As is known to all, solar energy is environmentally friendly. 36

Let’s start with the simple advantage of solar energy. 37 To make electricity or heat with solar energy you only need the sun’s rays and don’t use oil. Solar energy is cheaper compared with electric heating. 38 If you live in a faraway area where there are no power-lines, using solar energy can be the answer.

Even though all of the above is very useful, solar energy also has some disadvantages. The main disadvantage of solar energy is that it’s dilute. This means you have to have many solar collectors fixed around your house. 39 Another disadvantage is that not all the places solar energy can be produced. If you’re living in a part of this beautiful planet where there is not much sunlight, then using solar energy could be a problem. Of course if you live in desert areas, the sun produces much sunshine for the most part of the year and it is ideal for solar energy collecting. 40 Therefore if you need electricity or hot water during the night, like many of us do, it can be a problem. You’ll need battery systems that can store solar energy for later use.

  A. Solar energy is clean.

  B. The sun has much energy.

  C. Lastly, the sun only shines during the day.

  D. That is another big advantage of solar energy.

  E. Fixing solar collectors in your home is a good choice for you.

  F. Solar energy may be cheap but the solar collectors are expensive.

  G. But in fact, it has not only some advantages but also some disadvantages.

Last year, around Labor Day, I read a “Happy Ad” in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home for the aged, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line, here was her address. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.

A week or so later, someone knocked at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself as the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for sending such a nice card to his mom. Apparently, like many older folks, she did not receive much mail and was quite excited to receive mine. I just didn’t know what to say. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday.

That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, except to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a holiday card and also a couple of notes in between. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mails.

She passed away a couple of months ago. I never met this lady, but I did keep her and her family in my thoughts. I dropped them a line of sympathy. I hope that my few little notes were enough to brighten a couple of her days here on earth.

  24. The old lady lived ________.

  A. in a senior citizen’s home B. at her own home

  C. at her son’s home D. in a center of the local newspaper

  25. From the text, we can know that ________.

“Freelance retail consultant” (自由零售顧問)refers to daigou(代購) in Chinese, or overseas people who buy goods for customers in the Chinese mainland.

It’s estimated that there are 40,000 daigou in Australia, most of whom are young migrants or international students looking for ways to help cover their rent and university cost.

These freelance retail consultants have created thousands of trading routes, both small and big, into China.

Shops in Australia sold out of instant formula (嬰兒配方奶粉), leaving many Australian parents unable to buy their preferred brands. The Sydney Morning Herald reported last year that half of Australia’s infant formula sold went to China through customers selling to other customers.

Because of this, daigou have received criticism from Australian media. The Sydney Morning Post even suggested that the Australian government should put a limit on instant formula exports.

However, not everyone dislikes daigou. “We think daigou are good for the local economy and they are very good for our business,” Peter Nathan, the chief executive of A2 Milk, a New Zealand infant formula maker, told Reuters. “We clearly believe they are a positive force.”

Others agree that nothing is wrong with the practice. “People are buying these products legally on the Australian market… they’re not illegally being exported to China,” Tim Foulds, head of research at Euro monitor Australia and New Zealand, told The Washington Post.

  28. Why do most daigou in Australia buy goods for Chinese customers?

A.To improve living conditions B .To pay their expenses

  31. What’s the attitude of the author to Daigou?

  A. Supportive B.Objective C. Negative D. Doubtful

During the twenty years there has been increasing concern with the quality of the environment. Alone with air and water pollutants, noise pollution has been recognized as a serious pollutant. As noise levels have risen, the effects of noise have become more obvious.

Noise is defined as "unwanted sound". Causes of noise pollution include traffic, aircraft, rock bands, barking dogs, televisions, garbage trucks, and noise from neighbors, voices, alarms, and watercrafts. Studies show that over forty percent of Americans are disturbed at home or lose sleep because of noise pollution.

Noise has bad effects on people and the environment. Noise causes hearing loss, interferes with human activities at home and work, and is in various ways dangerous to people's health and well being.

When we think, talk, listen to music, or sleep, we need quiet. Even low levels of noise can be annoying or frustrating. Sudden increases in volume can make sounds annoying. The quieter the background is, the more penetrating a noise can be.

Noise can also make instructions or warning unclear, resulting in accidents. Louder noise bursts can cause more problems. Continued stress caused by living in noisy conditions can lead to high blood pressure, which is the major cause of some diseases.

Long exposure to noise levels above eight-five decibels(分貝) can damage inner cells and lead to hearing loss. Noise can result in the involuntary fear response and can cause adrenaline (腎上腺素) to be pumped into the bloodstream, the heart rate to quicken, muscles to tense, breathing to increase, and the digestive system to slow down.

Local government has the responsibility to fight noise pollution. For example, it can regulate the speed of trains through their community. On the other hand, a responsible citizen will never make noise pollution wherever he is.

32.What does the underlined word "penetrating" in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Loud and unpleasant B.Deep and shocking

C.High and exciting D.Clear and comfortable

33.Which of the following is related to noise pollution?

A.Quickening the digestive system B.Breathing fast

C.Slowing down the heart rate D.Having low blood pressure

34.In the last paragraph, the writer suggests that .

  A. people who make noise pollution should be punished.

B.the government should offer its people better education on noise pollution.

C.the government should be responsible for noise pollution.

D.individuals and government should work together to reduce noise pollution.

35.What is the text mainly about?

  A.Measurement of noise levels

  B.Hearing damage from environmental noise

  C.Bad effects of noise pollution

  D.Community reactions to noise
