[2016·昆明調(diào)研]Last Thursday, Michael and Linda stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to 4,000 homeless people for their wedding reception on the border town of Kilis. The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional feast reception, they would feed the victims from an earthquake-stricken area.

The idea came from the bridegroom's father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people who've suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day.

Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won over. When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients (接受者).

On Tuesday evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. “It's like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis-or sharing something with people who don't even have the most basic things,” Michael said. “Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need.”

[2016·山西四校聯(lián)考]What are the chances of a 100-year-old chocolate candy falling in your treat bag this Halloween? Though Goo Goo Clusters may not be as familiar as Kit Kat or Hershey bars, people of all ages have enjoyed it for an entire century.

In 1901, a 19-year-old named Howell Campbell opened a candy store in Nashville, Tennessee. He made all kinds of sweets and hard candies with just two copper kettles and about a dozen employees. Then, in 1912, he made the first candy to combine chocolate with other ingredients such as caramel, marshmallow, nougat, and peanuts. Originally, these clusters were hand-wrapped and sold under counter at a few local stores with a sign reading, “A nourishing (滋養(yǎng)的) lunch for a nickel.” Now, they are known as Goo Goo Clusters.

What else makes a Goo Goo so special? “In addition to it being the very first-ever combination confection created, its shape also makes it quite unique,” says Beth Sachan, Goo Goo Clusters' senior marketing manager. “The Goo Goo Cluster is a big, imperfectly round mound (垛) of deliciousness!”

The 100th anniversary of the Goo Goo Cluster is being celebrated throughout the month of October, the biggest candy-selling month of the year. About 40 restaurants in the Nashville area have created unique desserts inspired by Goo Goo Cluster to serve to their customers.

Additionally, a Goo Goo-sponsored race called the “Jog'n Hog” was held in Nashville on October 13. Adults and children ran three miles to the finish line after eating at least one of six Goo Goo Clusters from a bag they were given at the halfway point. A golden Goo Goo was hidden in one of the bags. The winner received a 0 gift certificate to the candy's website, googoo.com.

  Dear Sir/Madam,

  Yours,

  Li Hua

  One possible version:

  Dear_Sir/Madam,

I'm Li Hua, a Chinese student taking part in the exchange program in your university. I'm writing to ask for an early leave. I have been here for half a year, but I have some difficulty in adapting myself to life here, especially the daily diet. Besides, the major I'm learning here didn't go well as expected. I even can't understand what the teachers said in class. All mentioned above set off my homesickness and put me in low spirits. Thus, after months of frustration, I eventually decided to end this program ahead of schedule and go back to my home.

  Looking forward to your reply.

  Yours,

  Li_Hua
