Living next to the Spellmans, our new neighbors, almost drove my mother crazy. If shewasn’t shaming them for not attending church, or complaining to her sister Jackie about theway the Spellman girls dressed, then she was shoeing theSpellman’s dogs out of our yard orfiling noise complaints with the police, My mother had never been so busy. All she ever spokeof any more were the Spellmans and their wrongdoings.
One Sunday afternoon after church service, my mother was driving old Ms Parker hometo her house on the hill when we got a flat tire. As far as changing the tire, let’s just say thatwe were at the mercy of the good Lord. Since old Ms. Parker lived so far up that hill, not a lotof traffic drove by us. It had been about fifteen minutes since the last car passed when weheard the rattling and puttering of an old pickup truck as it pulled over to assist us.
The Spellman boys ran up on our car like a NASCAR pit crew. Before my mother couldeven protest, they had taken the tire off. "Her spare is flat, " said the middle one to the big one. " Give her ours”replied the big one, barely acknowledging the sacrifice. My mother wasstunned. "I don, t know what to say, "she stammered. The big one said, "Well, the Lord saidlove your neighbor, and we are neighbors, right?
The next day when the Spellman’s dogs went through my mother's flower garden, sheput out a bowl of water for them. When she saw the Spellman girls walking out with nothingbut a halter on, she lectured them about being upright ladies and offered them sweaters. Andwhen she heard the Spellman's music through our walls, she tried to dance a little bit. Sheeven invited the Spellmans to be part of the good neighbors committee. Now theneighborhood was a better place.

Ms. O'grady, the head of Britains Trades Union Congress, issued a challenge onSeptember 10th. "We can win a four-day working week, "she told members. The demand isfar from new. Shorter working weeks have been tried in New Zealand and Sweden, wherein happier, healthier and more motivated employees. Those who work shorterweeks are also reported to be more productive. Should weekends, therefore, be lengthened?
France’s experience suggests workers may not leap at the chance of working for fewerhours. The government reduced the full-time workers week to 35 hours in 2000. Last yearthe French worked 38.9 hours a week on average, seeming happy to labor above the requiredlevel and pocket the extra pay or holiday allowance.
And businesses may not seize the opportunity either. Working less may be linked tohigher productivity (on a per-hour basis), but overall output could still fall because of thesmaller number of hours worked. That will not get governments or employers excited.
Advocates of a four-day week could claim that improving people’s quality of life is moreimportant than boosting the economy. In an essay published during The Great Depression,John Maynard Keynes wrote of an"age of leisure and abundance"in which technologicaladvances would allow people to work 15-hour week.
Unfortunately for any readers working hard on a Friday aftemoon, Keynes jumped at his conclusion too soon. Even Ms. O'grady, now demanding a longer weekend, is pessimistic inher timescale. A four-day week is apparently achievable“in this century”.
24. The underlined phrase"leap at "in Paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A. Refuse B.grab C. abandonD. obtain
25. We can infer from the last paragraph that Ms. O'grady _______.
A.calls for an urgent attention to her suggestion
B. feels confident of making longer weekend a reality
C. regrets coming up with the idea of a longer weekend
D. realizes the idea of longer weekend remains a distant dream
26. What is the text mainly about?
A. A longer weekend isn’t that practical.
B. The French oppose a longer weekend
C. A longer weekend causes lower efficiency.
D. A three-day weekend is a fresh idea in Europe.

Palaces are known for their beauty and splendor, but they offer little protection againstattacks. It is easy to defend a fortress (堡壘),but fortresses are not designed with thecomfort of a king or queen in mind. When it comes to structures that are both majestic andwell-defended, the classic European castle is the best example of design. Across the agescastles changed, developed, and eventually fell out of use, but they still command thefascination of our culture.
Castles were originally built in England by Norman invaders. In 1066. As William theConqueror advanced through England, he defended key positions to secure the land he hadtaken. The castles he built allowed the Norman lords to draw back to safety when threatenedby English rebellion. Castles also served as bases of operation for offensive attacks. Troopswere summoned to(召集), organized around, and deployed (部署) from castles. In thisway castles served both offensive and defensive roles in military operations.
Not limited to military purposes, castles also served as offices from which the lord wouldadminister control over his kingdom. That is to say, the lord of the land would hold court inhis castle. Those that were socially beneath the lord would come to report the affairs of thelands that they governed and pay tribute to the lord. They would address conflicts, handlebusiness, feast, and enjoy festivities, In this way castles served as important social centers inmedieval England. Castles also served as symbols of power. Built on important andnoticeable sites overlooking the surrounding areas, castles constantly appeared in thebackground of many peasants'lives and served as a daily reminder of the lords strength.
Now, castles no longer serve their original purposes. However, the remaining castlesreceive millions of visitors each year from those who wish to experience the glory of a timelong passed.
27. The author introduces the topic of the text by _______.
A.making an assumption B. giving an example
C. making comparison D. giving arguments
28. Why did William the Conqueror build castles?
A. He wanted to celebrate his victory.
B. He wanted to remind people of his influence.
C. He wanted to live peacefully with the English.
D. He wanted to use them to his military advantage.
29. Which of the following is a way the lord would adopt to show his power?
A. Dealing with conflicts in his castle.
B. Building his castle in an obvious place.
C. Carrying out social activities in his castle.
D. Commanding peasants to live near his castle.
30. What attracts people to visit castles today?

Watch what you're thinking
If expecting to do well on a test can help you relax, what about if you expectyou won’t do well? Watch out for any negative messages you might be sending yourself aboutthe test. 35
If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts( I’m never any good at taking tests" orIt's going to be terrible if I do badly on this test "), replace them with positive messages. 第二節(jié)概要寫作(滿分25分)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容概要。
In the popular imagination, the rise of self-driving cars will mean greener cities, saferroads, and happier workers. With technology, speeding, braking, and reaccelerating -whichare responsible for much of the gas burned on roads, today and the resulting air pollution-would be a memory. But despite these opportunities, there are certain reasons why driverlessvehicles may fail to live up to some of these expectations, or at least take a little while longerto achieve them.
First, truly automated technology - at least the kind that requires no humaninvolvement -is rare in every sector of the economy, and there’s little reason to thinkdriving will be any different. There is a permanent need for a human backup incaseiving, that means human drivers will still bear the finalresponsibility for the cars they're riding in.
A related challenge-particularly for driverless cars-is the complexity of the systemsinvolved. For example, some cars today require over 100 million lines of software code (代碼) to keep them running More code means more functions, which, to some degree, alsomeans more opportunities for software errors. Driverless cars raise a challenge in this regard and possibly cause more opportunities for errors- errors that can lead to accidents.
Yet the greatest challenge facing driverless cars isn't technological, but psychological. Surveys consistently reveal global skepticism about the technology. Americans, for example, remain more worried than excited by driverless cars. Over half of the American public says itwould not ride one given the opportunity. This shows a deep-seated lack of trust in thetechnology. Similar ideas have been expressed worldwide.
What's more likely is that human drivers will continue applying some control over theircars, regardless of how automated those cars are. Some may quarrel with this idea. Butautomakers have long been preparing for it. Just ask Nissan, Waymo, and Zoo, all of whichare exploring ways for human drivers to retake control of a car should automation fail. Inother words, driverless does not-and will not-mean humanless.

Contrary to people's vision of a better city life, self-driving cars are on the road tonowhere. Two graduates from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom found themselves about to graduate, yet with loans to pay off. The pair decided to begin a strange, year-long project to battle their debt.
The men, Ross Harper and Edward Moyse, set up the website BuyMyFace.com last October as a way to get rid of the £50,000 they shared as student loans. The idea behind the project was to earn money by selling their faces as advertising space every day for a year. Each day, they advertise a different business by painting the brand’s name or logo onto their faces and upload the pictures to the homepage of BuyMyFace.com, adding a link to the advertiser’s website and including a short piece of text about it. After they paint their faces and publish them on the website, Harper and Moyse go out to highly populated areas such as music festivals and theme parks to maximize their faces’ exposure. They hope more people will pay attention to the advertisements on their faces.
At this time, Harper and Moyse have advertised their faces for over four months without skipping a day and they’re more than halfway to their goal. Though they first started charging a minimum of about £1.60 per company, the prices have risen as their popularity increases. For advertising space during the rest of April, they range between £250 and £750. Terri L. Rittenburg, associate professor of marketing at the University of Wyoming, said that she had heard of people tattooing (紋身) logos on themselves before, but this idea is much better. According to her, at first the idea would be new and unusual and attract attention. People are interested in this particular style of advertisement and would like to try what they advertise. But she is unsure how long it would last.
At least for now, companies that have bought Harper and Moyse’s faces have written positive comments on the pair’s website. “We had a three percent increase in website traffic on the very day and for two days more afterwards,” said one of the companies.

Are Happy Meals Really Happy?
Don’t we all know a “Happy Meal” when we see one--the famous boxed meal that includes a hamburger, kid-sized French fries, fruits and milk, served with a toy that’s extremely popular with children who love to collect them?
A Happy Meal is a form of kids’ meal sold at a certain fast-food chain since 1979. A toy is included in the meal, both of which are usually contained in a box or paper bag. However, collectors of these little toys will not get them any longer, since the company will replace toys with books and each of theses books will mainly pass on nutritional messages.
Happy Meals are extremely popular with kids, especially for their collectable toys, when you consider that over 1.3 billion of these packages are sold each year. These packages have been very controversial. Health supporters believe that drawing kids to these meals with toys is a clever way of promoting unhealthy food choices. They see it as an advertising a strategy of “catching its customers young”--a move that has paid off very well for the fast-food company.
Child development experts say that food habits get formed in children by age six and continue through to their adult life. Fatty and sugary foods such as those served in Happy Meals are believed to play a big role in growing health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Public health care costs have gone up and untold amounts of money have been spent on coping with these health problems. On November 2, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a law requiring that children’s meals sold in restaurants must meet certain nutritional standards before they could be sold with toys, to overcome the problem of childhood obesity--in other words, the State of California tried to ban the toys in Happy Meals. However, it was strongly opposed by some as being heavy-handed, and the ban was thrown out by the government.
While some people believe that the fast-food company, with its large following of children, can create a powerful message through the books, others believe its actions are contradictory. Anyway, the company is trying to spread the message of nutrition while it is serving food that is anything but healthy.

A.give a surprise to the toy lovers B.get readers’ attention to the article

30. According to Paragraph 3, Happy Meals_______.
A. have achieved the desired result
B. help the customers stay young
C. cost more money than ordinary meals
D. receive approval from health supporters
31. What is the author’s opinion about Happy Meals?
A. They bring much fun to children.
B. They teach children a lot about nutrition
C. They do no actual good to children’s health.
D. They are popular with the young and the old.

Is any economist so dull as to criticize Christmas? At first glance, the holiday season in western economies seems a treat for those concerned with such vagaries(奇思遐想)as GDP growth. After all, everyone is spending; in America, retailers make 25% of their yearly sales and 60% of their profits between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even so, economists find something to worry about in the nature of the purchases being made.
Much of the holiday spending is on gifts for others. At the simplest level, giving gifts involves the giver thinking of something that the recipient would like--he tries to guess her preferences, as economists say--and then buying the gift and delivering it. Yet this guessing of preferences is not easy; indeed, it is often done badly. Every year, ties go unworn and books unread. And even if a gift is enjoyed, it may not be what the recipient would have bought if they had spent the money themselves.
Interested in this mismatch between wants and gifts, in 1993 Joel Waldfogel, then an economist at Yale University, sought to estimate the difference in dollar terms. In a study, he asked students two questions at the end of a holiday season: first, estimate the total amount paid(by the givers) for all the holiday gifts you received; second, apart from the sentimental value of the items, if you did not have them, how much would you be willing to pay to get them? His results were gloomy: on average, a gift was valued by the recipient well below the price paid by the giver.
In addition, recipients may not know their own preferences very well. Some of the best gifts, after all, are unexpected items that you would never have thought of buying, but which turn out to be especially well picked. And preferences can change. So by giving a jazz CD, for example, the giver may be encouraging the recipient to enjoy something that was ignored before. This, a desire to build skills, is possibly the hope held by many parents who ignore their children’s desires for video games and buy them books instead.
Finally, there are items that a recipient would like to receive but not purchase. If someone else buys them, however, they can be enjoyed guilt-free. This might explain the volume of chocolate that changes over the holidays. Thus, the lesson for gift-givers is that you should try hard to guess the preference of each person on your list and then choose a gift that will have high sentimental value.

B. Chocolate will be blamed when people receive them as gifts.

34. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the text?
A. The gift-giver tries to neglect the actual needs of the receiver.
B. The best gifts are well picked by the givers.
C. In gift-giving, guessing preferences is often a failure, so it’s the thought that counts.
D. You have to take money into consideration when giving a gift.

What to Do When Someone Doesn’t Like You
When someone tells me, “I don’t care if people like me,” they are showing me the emotional wall they use to block the hurt of rejection.
As humans are social animals, all of us care if people like us. Based on the need for social connection, your reactions to rejection and negative judgment can range from minor hurt to breakouts of depression. 36
The first step to handle a negative situation is to recognize your reaction. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling?” 37 Any betrayal or embarrassments in your heart? Identify what feeling has shown up in your body.So you can choose what to do next.
38 When you sense yourself shutting down or feeling defensive, ask yourself what the person actually meant to do to you. Did they truly mean to offend you, or make fun of you? Your brain works very hard to keep you safe, so it will judge a situation as threatening if there is any possibility of social harm
When our brains sense a possible threat, we react as if we were personally attacked. Take a breath to relieve the stress. 39
Finally, if you believe the person doesn’t like you, ask yourself if this matters. 40 If not, what can you do to release your need to be liked by this person? And, what can you do to stay neutral and not return the dislike? The more you can come to accept others as who they are, the more you can move forward with your goals regardless if someone likes you or not.
A. If you can, look the person in their eyes.
B. Do you feel any fear or anger in your head?
C. Ask yourself what is true about the situation.
D. Often people do not realize the impact of their words.
E. Will the person’s judgment of you impact your work or life?
F. The ability to let a show of dislike roll off your back is a learned skill.
G. This will ground you in the present and take you out of your trembling mind.

Since it is the first time for us to go to Australia, we’d like to know the details about the accommodation so that we can make some preparations in advance. Also, I would appreciate it if we would work out a proper schedule for both sides.

I was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I fumbled(摸索) in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches; they had taken those. I looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him “Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don't know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness; perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn't want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.
I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a person and not just a guard. “Do you have kids?” he asked. “Yes, here, here.” I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes were filled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.

Cleadale, Isle of Eigg, Inner Hebrides

Swattesfield, Thornham Magna, Suffolk
Deep in the wilds of north Suffolk, this seven-acre campsite has only been open for a few years, with two fields separated by a lake and surrounded by woodland. The position is perfect. To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. In spite of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you
are—always!
Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic (神經(jīng)兮兮的)art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things—all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments, so much that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the other hand, we also delay our happiness, often convincing ourselves that "someday" will be much better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look foward to the future will only repeat themselves so that "someday" never actually arrives. John Lennon once said,"Life is what is happening while we are busy making other plans. " When we are busy making " other plans" ,our children are busy growing up,the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.
Many people live as if life were dress rehearsal for some late date. It isn't. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future—we won’t have enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever.
To combat fear, the best strategy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said, “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” I don't think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on here and now. Your efforts will pay off.

Gold is one of the rarest materials on Earth and has always been considered a valuable and precious resource. It's very likely that someone in your family owns something made of gold, especially since China is one of the world's biggest buyers of gold jewellery. It's even in our smartphones - they contain parts made from this expensive material.
But where does this beautiful metal actually come from? The answer: outer space.
This August, Chinese scientists became the first in the world to witness gravitational waves(引力波)caused by the collision of neutron (中子)stars, reported Xinhua News Agency.
The sight was witnessed at China's Kunlun Antarctic Station at the South Pole, and Insight, China’s first X-ray astronomical satellite, also contributed to the discovery.
Although collisions of black holes have been recorded before, this was the first time that two neutron stars were known to have collided. It's believed that such collisions lead to huge explosions of energy, and even to the creation of precious metals such as gold and silver.
“The collision of neutron stars is like a very large gold factory in the universe,” Jin Zhiping,a researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Xinhua.
According to an article published by space.com, scientists have long believed gold and other materials are created in this way, but it wasn't until the recent collision that their theory was confirmed.
“The origin of the really heaviest chemical elements in the universe had confused the scientific community for quite a long time,” Hans-Thomas Janka, a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany, said in a news release. “Now, we have the first observational proof for neutron star mergers(合并) as sources.”
Indeed, the recently observed collision is thought to have produced an amount of gold that would weigh 10 times more than Earth, according to New Scientist
Don’t expect to be showered in gold any time soon, however. The collision actually took place 130 million years ago, taking all that time for the event's light to reach Earth.
But at least if you want to see a piece of space up close, all you have to do is to look at the ring on your mom's finger - or the smartphone in your pocket.

參考例文
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 3 student. Learning that you will organize a Chinese & American culture Camp this summer, I’m writing to apply to be a member of it for the following reasons.
To begin with, I have a good command of English, which enables me to communicate with American friends fluently. As a Chinese, I have mastered various skills related to our traditional culture, Taichi being my favorite because it does much good to my health and I have been practicing it for 5 years. Sure enough, American friends will be crazy about it after touching it. And as you know, Chinese cooking is popular all over the world. It happens that I’m expert at it and I’m delighted to present some traditional Chinese dishes to everybody.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application seriously, for I’ m eager to share the wonderful time with you. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua
