When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn’t let that happen.
Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day,he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. Clark was selected as Disney‘s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names,Mr. Clark said,“You’re all going.”
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages (孤兒院)。 It was the most amazing experience of my life. The most important holiday in spring, especially for Christians (__),is Easter. This Christian holiday is not on the same date every year, but it’s always on a Sunday. It can be any Sunday between March 22 and April 25. Many people celebrate Easter by buying new clothes. Children celebrate by hunting for colored eggs that their parents have hidden around the house. People also give Easter baskets filled with candy and other goodies to one another to celebrate the day.
But the holiday is more than new clothes and good things to eat. On Easter, many people go to church to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection (復(fù)活) from the dead.
Most people color them. Some people hide them. Others just eat them. But no matter what one does with Easter eggs, they are an important Easter tradition throughout the Western world.
People from many different cultures celebrate Easter. In both America and Belgium, children look for Easter eggs hidden on lawns and in bushes. In America, children believe the eggs are hidden by the Easter bunny (復(fù)活節(jié)兔子)。 But in Belgium, the hidden eggs are supposed to have fallen from church bells. In Bulgaria, red Easter eggs are lucky in churches; Bulgarian families also hit these Easter eggs together to see whose is the strongest. The winner looks forward to good fortune that year. Still dozens of other Easter traditions exist. In parts of Austria, for example, children sing from door to door and are rewarded with colorful eggs.

About eight years ago, I was a new teacher in the local women's prison(監(jiān)獄), where most of the prisoners were drug users. During one of my classes, a woman was crying. Her 17-year-old daughter had been ill. She wanted to see her, but she had no way to get to the hospital 30miles away. Having a daughter at the same age, I applied(申請(qǐng)) to drive the woman to the hospital .Finally I was allowed to go together with her for three hours on the following Saturday.
We were both in good spirits when we arrived at the hospital. Her daughter was in a worse situation than either of us could imagine. She couldn't recognize her mother. I encouraged the mother to hold her daughter's hands, touch her face and talk to her softly. Also, I sang some of the songs I used to sing to my daughter. The mother was in a deep state of depression and hopelessness. She wept(哭泣), and I held her silently in my arms.
A few weeks later, I learned that her daughter had passed away. That Saturday was the last time her mother had seen her. By helping them, I also learnt something important. That afternoon, I was reminded never to take those I love for granted. Love and value them right now.

In the past, many people depended on horses for transportation(運(yùn)輸), farming and other kinds of work. Nowadays a lot of people still like to ride horses. So it is not surprising that many expressions about it are still used by Americans today.
Long ago, people who were rich or important rode horses that were very tall. Today, if a girl is too proud and looks down upon others, you might say she should "get off her high horse."
Last night, I got a telephone call while I was watching my favorite television show. I decided not to answer it because "wild horses could not drag me away" from the television -- there was nothing that could stop me from doing what I wanted to do.
Sometimes you get information "straight from the horse's mouth." It comes directly from the person who knows most about the subject and is the best source. Let us say your teacher tells you there is going to be a test tomorrow. You could say you got the information "straight from the horse's mouth." However, you would not want to call your teacher a horse!
You may have heard this expression: "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink." That means you can give someone advice but you cannot force him to do something he does not want to do.
In politics, a "dark-horse candidate" is someone who is not well known to the public. Sometimes, a dark horse unexpectedly wins an election(選舉).
Another piece of advice is "do not change horses in midstream." You would not want to get off one horse and on to another in the middle of a river. Or make major changes in an activity that has already begun.
61. What does the underlined word “it” mean in the first paragraph?
A. the horse B. riding horses C. raising horses D. horse racing

C. who thinks she is better than anyone else D. who is respected by others

B. The news will be true and reliable(可靠的).
C. The person who gives the news is called a horse.
D. The news is a lie and can’t be trusted.
64. Which of the following can describe a person who wins an election unexpectedly?
A. do not change horses in midstream B. wild horses could not drag me away
C. dark-horse candidate D. get off her high horse
65. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.The horse is a kind of useful animal. B.The expressions used by Americans.
C.Some expressions about the horse D. It is popular to use the word “horse”

In many high schools, there are strict rules about using mobile phones. If your phone rings in class, for example, the teacher will be very angry.
Every mobile phone has a ringtone(鈴聲). It tells you that someone is calling you. Now, there is a ringtone called “mosquitotone(蚊子鈴聲)”. Using it, students can receive calls and text messages(短信) in class but the teacher will not realize what is happening. How?
Mosquitotone has a special sound. Only children and teenagers can hear it. As we get older, we are unable to hear some sounds with high frequencies(頻率). As a result, a child or teenager can hear the mosquitotone ringtone, but it’s inaudible to someone who is 20 or older.
But sometimes, people over 20 can hear the ringtone. One British student’s phone uses mosquitotone. In class, the student’s phone rang. The 32-year-old teacher looked at the student and became unhappy. “I heard that. You know the rule: no mobile phone in class.”
Not all the students are interested in mosquitotone. Jerry Jones, a high school student of 17, says, “Using mosquitotone too often is bad for our hearing. I may use it for pleasure, but not in class. It’s unfair to the teachers!”
What do parents think of mosquitotone? “I think it is perfect for places like movie theaters.” says Connie Neeson, 44. “Think about it. You’re watching a film and someone’s mobile phone rings. Mosquitotone is good because many people don’t hear it. However, it also has a bad influence on their study if students use it in class.”
66. Mosquitotone works because _________.
A. it is very loud B. it has no sound
C. it has a beautiful sound D. it uses high frequencies
67. The underlined part “it’s inaudible to” in Paragraph 3 means “______”.

You can make a difference by listening, asking questions, giving information, and reading with your children outside school hours.

There are amazing things in the world. The story about Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, is one of the widely spread legends(傳說(shuō))in the early 20th century.
On 22 July 1933, two visitors, Mr and Mrs George Spicer, were driving along the Loch Ness —one of the most famous _____ in the highlands of Scotland. Suddenly, they saw an animal on the road in front of them. Unlike any other animals that they had seen before, it had a very big body and a small head, but no legs. When Mr and Mrs Spicer saw it, it was moving towards the lake like a snake. Later on, the animal was described like a long black or green dinosaur(恐龍), and it was informally called Nessie.
Soon, stories about this strange animal and Loch Ness became famous all over the world. Now people are still interested in Nessie and many visit Loch Ness in the hope of seeing Nessie.
Some scientists think that Nessie is not a monster(怪獸) at all, but a very large animal such as a seal(海豹), or perhaps a shark or a whale. Other scientists do not think so. They think it may be something unusual that lives in the water. Anyway, they are all sure that a kind of large animal lives in the lake.

Recently, my college degree has just been completed. The last project was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out to smile at three people and write down their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake.
My husband, the youngest son and I went out to McDonald. We were standing in line when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away. As I turned around, an unpleasant body smell came to my nose and two poor homeless men stood just behind me. As I looked at the short blue-eyed gentleman closest to me, he was “smiling”. The second man fumbled(摸索)with his hands as he stood behind his friend.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss,” because that was all they could afford.
Then I really felt it — I embraced(擁抱)the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked two more breakfast meals and gave them to the men.
The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you.”
I turned in my project. My teacher said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need to make people happy and to be made happy.
In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald’s and every soul that heard the story in the classroom. But, I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn.

Fluency(流利) in another language is one of the most important aims of a newcomer to another country. In addition, understanding the culture and learning to communicate comfortably with people of that culture are as important as learning the rules of the language. Language learning and culture learning go together and may take a long time.?
Sometimes people feel that they understand a culture after a few weeks or months. People do learn a lot when they first begin living in another culture, but this is only the first stage of learning. It usually includes things like learning everyday activities and some basic customs.?
To really understand another culture, people have to go beyond the first stage, This is challenge because it is often difficult to know what to learn. Much of what we call “culture” is hard to see.
Culture is like an iceberg(冰山). Picture in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean. The only part of the iceberg that you see is the top. You don’t see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water. It is easy to forget that it is there. Most of the iceberg is deep within the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep within its people.?
When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are easy to see: You hear another language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent(口音). You see different foods, clothes and sometimes physical characteristics of people. You notice new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and, bowing or kissing as a way of saying hello. These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too difficult to understand. They are visible so they are seen easily and quickly.?
The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists of assumptions(設(shè)想), communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong. The hidden part of culture affects much of a person’s way of thinking and communicating. It is the meaning behind his or her verbal (言語(yǔ)的) and nonverbal language. Learning to communicate well with people from another culture includes getting to know the hidden part of culture.
61. What’s the subject of this passage?
A. Learning about culture. B. Language learning.
C. The hidden part of the iceberg. D. Fluency in another language.
62. What is learning about culture?
A. Learning the hidden part of the iceberg, which is underwater.
B. Learning everyday activities and some basic customs.
C. Learning the culture of an iceberg.
D. Learning the visible as well as the hidden differences of culture.
63. What’s the writer’s opinion?
A. Communication styles can be easily seen and learned.
B. Language learning is more important than culture learning.
C. Learning about culture is not easy and may take a long time.
D. People usually learn a culture after a few weeks or months.
64. The underlined phrase “consists of” can be replaced by “______”.
A. is compared with B. is made up of C. agrees with D. is different from
65. What conclusion can we draw after reading this passage?
A. Values and beliefs are like the top of the iceberg.
B. People are often clear about the hidden part of culture.
C. The top of the iceberg is larger than the hidden part.
D. The hidden part of culture has a great effect on people’s communication styles.

“Be nice to people.” This sounds like a platitude(老生常談),but I’ll never forget my father’s words. I was 10, and I had been unkind to someone. He said, “There is no point in being unkind to anyone at any time. You never know who you’re going to meet later in life. And by the way, you don’t change anything by being unkind. Usually you don’t get anywhere.”
“Remember you can do anything you want to do. Don’t let anyone say, ‘You’re not smart enough, it’s too hard, it’s a foolish idea, no one has done that before, girls don’t do that.’ ”My mom gave me that advice in 1973. And it allowed me to never worry what others were saying about my job direction.
“Always do the best job you can do at whatever you’re given, even if you think it’s boring.” Jerry Parkinson, my boss at P&G, told me this in 1979. Here I was fresh out of Harvard Business School(HBS), and I was told to decide how big the hole in the Ivory shampoo bottle should be: 3/8 of an inch or 1/8 of an inch. I did research, focus groups and I would come home at night wondering how I had gone from HBS to this. But later I realized any job you’re given is an opportunity to prove yourself.
“Don’t be greedy(貪婪的). If you’re constantly in the neighborhood of good things, good things will happen to you.” Tom Tierney, who was my boss at Bain in 1981 and is now on the eBay board, told me this. It’s true that you get ahead by praising other people.
Finally, in 1998, I was in New York watching the ticker(倒計(jì)時(shí)牌) as eBay went public. My husband is a surgeon(外科醫(yī)生).I called him and told him the great news. And he said, “That’s nice. But Meg, remember that it’s not brain surgery.”
71. According to the passage, which of the following is different from the other three?
A.P&G. B. HBS. C. Bain. D. eBay.

A. Two. B. Four. C. Three. D. One.
73. This passage was written by _____ order.

74. According to the last paragraph, what her husband actually meant was that _____.
A. he was a nice doctor B. he was better than Meg
C. 1ife matters the most D. eBay was nothing at all
75. What’s the main idea of the whole passage?
A. Advice in life really makes a difference to us.
B. We should be nice to people around us.
C. People can succeed by praising others.
D. Too unkind persons will get nothing from life.
