Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were on vacation at their uncle’s lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure (霧怪) that lived in the lake. Justin and Mary decided to see it before their vacation ended.

“Is it foggy outside?” asked Mary, as Justin looked out the window.

  “Yes! Let’s go!” said Justin.

It was only 5:00 am, so everyone else in the house was still asleep. Mary and Justin came to the boat dock (碼頭). They saw thick fog over the lake.

“Do you see anything?” asked Mary.

“Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare (使害怕) us with that story?”

Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He told Justin and Mary many stories, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling that it wasn’t made up.

Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure lives in the lake. We’re on the dock. Maybe that’s why we can’t see him.”

“You want to go out on the water?” asked Justin.

Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas’s boat, but the fog was too thick.

They walked towards the end of the dock and saw the outline (輪廓) of the boat. They carefully got into the boat.

Mary was nervous. “See anything?” They looked around, and slowly, the fog began to lift. Mary turned around and shouted, “The Foggy Figure!” It was in the boat with them!

Justin and Mary hugged each other in fear (驚恐地), but then they heard a laugh. It was from Uncle Thomas. “I knew that story would get you two out of bed early enough to take a boat ride with me.”

Justin and Mary were happy that there was no Foggy Figure.

New Zealand is in the Pacific Ocean and it’s made up of two islands: the North Island and the South Island.

About a thousand years ago, the Maori people came from the islands of the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand and made it their home. Since then, people have come from all over the world to live in New Zealand.

New Zealand has three official (官方的) languages: English, Maori and New Zealand Sign Language. Many places in New Zealand have Maori names. “Kia ora” is a Maori language greeting (問候).

New Zealand has mild (溫和的) temperatures and lots of sunshine. January and February are the warmest months of the year, while July is the ______.

New Zealand has many special birds. The best known is the kiwi. The kiwi, about the size of a large chicken, can’t fly. It is the symbol of the country and you can find pictures of kiwis on New Zealand stamps and coins. The kiwi is named after its calls — kewe, kewe. New Zealanders are also called Kiwis, but very few New Zealanders have ever seen a kiwi bird in the wild!

I’m Grace. I always feel so good when I give people their first pair of glasses. I was 11 years old when I first visited a clinic (診所) in Nicaragua, a very poor country. My mum had asked me if I wanted to come along to volunteer with VOSH International, an organization (組織) that takes glasses to poor people a round the world. I said yes. That experience has changed my life — and the way I look at it.

The clinic works like this: People who need glasses travel hours to get there and wait in unbelievably long lines. An eye doctor examines them, and they bring their eyeglass prescriptions (驗光單) to me. I dig through boxes to find lenses (鏡片) that match them.

I’ll never forget how one 70-year-old woman felt when I gave her a pair of glasses. She was surprised at all of the things she could finally see — a picture on the wall, the lines on my face. This really touched me.

In January this year, I volunteered at the clinic for the fifth time. The week-long trip made me think a lot. Many of the poorest people I’ve ever met in Nicaragua are also the happiest. They don’t have much, but they’re so appreciative (表示感激的) of what they do have.

I love what it feels like to help somebody else. And my trips to Nicaragua have taught me to help others in other ways. A few years ago, I raised money to help a girl in Africa attend school, and when Hurricane (颶風(fēng)) Sandy hit my state, I helped rebuild homes. I also volunteer at the local library every Friday.
