With the movie The Queen, and the award of an Oscar to its star Helen Mirren, the British monarch (君主) is in the spotlight again.

Elizabeth is the daughter of George VI, who was king between 1936 and 1952. She has ruled Britain for the last 55 years. As a girl, the then Princess Elizabeth was educated at home. She didn’t go to university, few women did at the time. During World War II, she served in the British Army. She married Philip Mountbatten in 1949.

Little is known about the Queen’s personal life. In an age when to be famous is to live in a glass house, she is an unusual case. Partly this is because it is considered undignified (不莊重的) for a monarch to show too much about himself or herself to the world. The Queen is famously enthusiastic about horse racing and keeps corgis (威爾士矮腳狗). The Oscar-winning movie deals with a large problem the Queen faces. She is thought not to understand the people. The movie is about the events that followed the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997. It was no secret that relations between the Queen and Diana had always been difficult.

But when Diana died, many were shocked at how Buckingham Palace responded. The Royal Family wanted a small private funeral (葬禮) for her. It was obvious that Diana’s devoted followers wanted a large, public one which she finally got. It seemed to sum up how little the Queen understood the people.

  36. Since when has Elizabeth ruled England?

  A. 1936. B. 1949. C. 1952. D. 1997.

  37. During her rule, Elizabeth _____.

  A. often appears on media B. seldom appears on media

  C. people think she can’t understand them

  D. she has no supporters

  39. Diana’s funeral was _____.

  A. a small private one B. a large public one

  C. a common one D. a secret one

  40. Who is Helen Mirren?

  B. She is the woman who put the Queen in the spotlight again.

  C. She has won the award of an Oscar because of her relationship with the Queen.

  D. She was one of Diana’s devoted followers.

Of all the famous English writers, probably the best known is William Shake-speare. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 on April 23. His father was an important man in town so Shakespeare had a good upbringing. Shakespeare probably went to school but not university. He got married when he was 18 to Anne Hathaway and the couple had 3 children.

Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets (a sonnet is a kind of poem). He began working in his home town of Stratford but by 1592 was writing in London. He became rich enough to buy a house in the capital and one in Stratford. He wrote sad stories called tragedies, like Romeo and Juliet, funny stories or comedies, romantic stories and stories about historical figures such as Julius Caesar.

Shakespeare died on his birthday in 1616, almost 400 years ago. But why is his work still popular today? His work looked at common human themes, such as betrayal, murder, lust, power, ambition and love. These themes are as much a part of human nature today as they were all those years ago and are the themes we see in modern soap operas and Hollywood films.

Shakespeare’s influence on the English language can still be felt today. We talk about “fair play”, meaning honest behavior but this phrase was first used by Shakespeare. He coined the phrase “you can have too much of a good thing”. And it was Shakespeare who came up with the expression to disappear “into thin air” which we still use today when we lose something. Shakespeare’s work has been translated into every major language in the world. And perhaps we’ll still be as fascinated by his work 400 years from now as we’ve been for almost the last 400.

  53. What type of story is Romeo and Juliet?

  A. It’s a sad love story. B. It’s a romantic travel story.

  C. It’s a fierce war story. D. It’s an ancient revenge story.

  54. One possible reason why Shakespeare’s works are still popular is that _________.

  A. the themes in his works are still hot topics of human nature today

  B. his works are like the soap operas people enjoy today

  C. many of his works are adapted into Hollywood movies

  D. people enjoy seeing ancient plays with all kinds of styles

  A. more and more phrases first used by Shakespeare will come into fashion

  四、書面表達 (共兩節(jié),滿分45分)

  第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15分)

In the year 2020,the world is going to have a population of about 10billion.Most scientists agree that the most severe problem is food supply.

Who is going to feed all those people?Where is the food going to come from? Are we going to have enough food? Are we going to produce more artificial food?

One way of improving the situation is for people to eat less meat. Why?Because it takes 4kilos of grain protein to produce half a kilo of meat protein.Clearly, there is not going to be sufficient meat protein for 10 billion people. Therefore,it will also be necessary to change eating habits because meat is the main part of many people’s food today.

A possible solution to this latter problem is the soybean. The soybean plant produces beans which have a very high fat and protein content. Scitentists can now make these look and taste like real meat. They can also make many other artificial products such as soybean milk, for example, which has a taste of milk and can be used in cooking in very much the same ways as cow’s milk.In fact, one woman in the United States fed her family only on soybeans for a year! She gave them soybean beef, soybean chicken, and sometimes just soybeans.Possibly,we are all going to eat soybeans in the future and finally give up meat completely from our tables.

56 What is the main subject of the passage?

57 According to the passage, why will meat completely disappear in the future?

  One possible version:

An Eyewitness Account of a Traffic Accident

My name is Li Ming. I saw a traffic accident on my way to school. It happened at about 7:00 on the morning of April 2nd.It was raining heavily. Two boys were riding a bike each, talking with each other. They each were holding an umbrella in one hand, and the handle in the other. As they turned right, a car came out at a high speed and turned left on the corner. Though both of the boys and the driver acted quickly, it was too late. One of the boys was hit by the car and badly hurt.

In my opinion, there are several reasons for this tragedy. First, the boy was absent-minded. He was talking all the way, holding an umbrella while riding. Second, the bad weather and the slippery road made it hard for the driver to bring the car to a full stop as quickly as possible. Last, the big tree made the road conditions invisible when they were going to make a turn.
