1This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic:it will buy transitional cotton at higher prices, thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material.
Wal-Mart is set to announce initiative。aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic為major initiative的后置定語;冒號之后的內(nèi)容是對major initiative的具體解釋說明,其中thus helping…
he set to do sth.
They were all set to go when the bell rang.
aim at doing sth.
We must aim at increasing the profits.
I'd rather go hungry than have breakfast.
This eye patient may go blind.
2Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man"。
Boys were said to be likely to... that helped develop their emotional expressiveness為定語從句修飾cultural and artistic activities; rather than 作介詞,后接動名詞結(jié)構(gòu)feeling...,同時該結(jié)構(gòu)中的they had to conform to the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man”是feeling的賓語從句。
be said to意為“據(jù)說,被認為”。
如:Women are often said to be more emotional than men.
When all things are considered, more and more young adults of today live more satisfying lives than those of their parents, in my opinion.
在這句話中,“When all things are considered”和“in my opinion”在句子中都沒有表達任何信息,因此會讓閱卷人感覺考生有湊字數(shù)的嫌疑,這些內(nèi)容完全可以去掉。改成:
More and more young adults of today live more satisfying lives than those of their parents.
Due to the fact that our grandparents were under an obligation to help their parents, they didn’t have the options that young people have at this point in time.
句中的“Due to the fact”其實就是“because”的意思,“were under an obligation”等表達也很啰嗦,因此這個表達顯得很繁瑣,上面的句子可以替換為:
Because our grandparents were obligated to help their parents, they didn’t have the options that young people have now.
Several reasons accounted for his success. One was his own diligence. Another was the guidance from his tutor.
