Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.

Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and finally Eastern Europe.

China is planning to extend(延長(zhǎng)) its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.

If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could rush from London to Beijing within two days. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.

China’s bullet train(高速列車), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.

Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safet y and maintenance(保養(yǎng)) of railway tracks. So, it’s important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on longer railway construction.

China prefers that the other countries provide natural resources rather than financial investment. Resources from those countries could flood into China to support development.

It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will certainly create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries.

For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We predict that in the coming decades, millions of people will move to the western parts, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west. And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.

  28. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is .

  A. financial problems B. safety of the system

  C. technical issues D. m aintenance of railway tracks

  29. What’s the author’s attitude towards China’s high-speed railway plan?

  A. Positive B. Negative C. Doubtful D. Critical

  30. China’s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because .

  A. China and the countries involved will get much-needed resources

  B. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways

  C. Chin a will develop its railway system and communication with other countries

  D. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism

  31. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

  A. International Railway Network[ B. High-speed Bullet Trains

  C. Big Railway Dreams D.源:New Railway Standards

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(叛逆). I suggested they recall their own teenage years. At that age they would like to be growing away from parents. They preferred to stand on their own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of going out fighting bravely on their own, most of them are clutching (緊握) at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They declare they want to dress as they like. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up gathering around listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in a similar way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蠶繭) into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this create a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go for it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really matters.

  32. This passage is aimed at _______.

  A. people who try to understand and respect each other

  B. readers who try to be popular with people around

  C. parents who try to control and guide their children

  D. teenagers who try to seek for their real selves

  33. The author doesn’t prefer rebelling teenagers _______.

  A. walking a new way on their own

  B. always turning to friends for help

  C. growing away from parents

  D. following others blindly

  34. The phrase “larger cocoon” at the end of the second pa ragraph refers to _ ______.

  A. the care and love from parents

  B. the popular trend in the society

  C. the present teenage market

  D. the fantastic music world

  35. According to the author, what might happen when a teenager follows his/her own path?

  A. He/She gets larger collection. B. He/She gains valuable popularity.

  C. He/She shares fresh thoughts with classmates. D. He/She loses good friends.

  One possible version:

It is known to us all that some students cheat in the examinations at school. It has three reasons. First of all, there are so many exams for the students. Besides, the exams given are difficult in some way. Secondly, some students have to cheat in the exams because they are too lazy to study. The last reason is to please their parents and teachers. For some students, bad marks give them great pressure and make them depressed.

In my opinion, cheating in exams is wrong. It is not allowed in the school rules. We should take active attitude to our studies, be honest and hard-working, and try to get a mark which is true as well as good. In a word, study is our duty.
