At the battle of Ypres in 1914, British colonel Walter Loring made no concessions to the Germans. Mounted on a white horse, he was leading his men on the Menin Road when his foot was smashed by a bullet. The medical officer ordered him to the rear, but he told the man to “ Go to hell ” and asked his servant to bring his slippers.
Equipped with these he remounted his charger, only to suffer a fall as the horse was shot under him. He then mounted a bay and rode on a short distance before this too was shot. Hobbling with a stick, he continued to lead his men up the road and, urging them onwards, he died.

The terrace was never completed.

He can’t find his hat. Where is it? Jack thinks hard. He looks up and down, and walks here and there. He can’t find his hat yet.
