一、作“是……還是……”解時(shí)，whether表示一種選擇，其后可以跟介詞短語或不定式短語。
1. 后跟介詞短語。例如：
(1)She made the mistake whether by accident or by design.
不知她是偶然還是故意去犯這個(gè)錯(cuò)誤的。
(2)Whether through choice or obedience I don”t know, but he certainly did all the work very well.
是出于內(nèi)心自愿還是奉命行事，這我不曉得，不過他的確是把所有的工作都做好了。
2. 后跟動(dòng)詞不定式短語。例如：
(1)I don’t know whether to accept the offer or refuse it. (= It is doubtful whether to accept the offer or refuse it. )對(duì)這個(gè)提議，我不知道是接受好，還是拒絕好。
(2)It is to be decided whether to go or stay here.
是走還是呆在這兒還有待決策。(it作形式主語。)

二、作“是否，會(huì)不會(huì)”解時(shí)，whether可用來引導(dǎo)名詞性從句，即主語從句、賓語從句、表語從句和同位語從句。
1. 引導(dǎo)主語從句。引導(dǎo)主語從句時(shí)，可用it作形式主語。例如：
(1)Whether they consider this opinion or not is not clear. (= It is not clear whether they consider this opinion or not. )
他們是否考慮這個(gè)意見還不清楚。
(2)Whether we shall be able to come is doubtful. (= It is doubtful whether we shall be able to come. )我們是否能夠來，尚不確定。
2. 引導(dǎo)賓語從句。這時(shí)whether可與if換用。例如：

(2)I wonder whether we shall be in time for the last bus or (whether we shall)have to walk home.

4. 引導(dǎo)同位語從句。它的前面通常有fact, conclusion, news, problem, question, idea, doubt等名詞作同位語結(jié)構(gòu)的中心詞。例如：
(1)She has answered the question whether or not this supermarket is the largest one in the region.

三、作“不論……還是……”解時(shí)，whether引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句。例如：
(1)Whether you can see the moon or not, it is always round.

(2)You may rely upon my help, whether others help you or not.
不論別人幫不幫你，你都可以依賴我的幫助。
四、whether or no除了能夠像whether or not一樣引導(dǎo)名詞性從句外，還能單獨(dú)放在句首或句末，作“無論如何”解。這時(shí)，它僅起狀語作用。例如：
(1)We should complete the general design of the motorcar this year, whether or no.
無論如何，今年我們應(yīng)該完成這種汽車的總體設(shè)計(jì)。
(2)You should support your parents, whether or no.
