D:Hi, Roy. How are your things going?
R:Fine. Everything is going smoothly.
D:This is Miss Harriet Smith, finance manager of A & P Corporation.
This is Mr. Roy Stanford.
H:How do you do?
R:How do you do? I work in the international trade and banking division.
As you know, we're very much involved with many large American corporations dealing withinternational trade.
H:Yeah. That's why I come here this afternoon.
R:What we're doing is actively and hopefully developing a relationship with large companiesincluding their subsidiaries or branches to ensure that we can provide all services they need.
H:Would you please be more specific?
R:Sure. We handle all types of letters of credit, and also advise if they should be irrevocable,
whether they should be confirmed, whether we would recommend them in certaincircumstances.
And of course, we deal with documentary collections and so on.
H:So your division is to ensure that its customers receive payment for the goods they expect.
R:That's where we can help an exporter like your corporate.
You see, it can happen any time that an exporter has to wait two or even three years beforethey are able to obtain their money after they ship goods to a buyer abroad.
It could be of any reason. That's why we always hear people say that exporting is easy;
it's getting paid that's the hard part.
H:I'm afraid it's the case we sometimes have to confront.
R:But of course, we're not all the time selling a service.
A lot of the time we give advice and solve problems to our customers.
H:What's a typical problem that you would expect a customer to come to you about?
R:For example, just recently we had one with a contract that was signed to supply somemachinery to a company in France.
H:What happened? And what role did you play?
R:The contract was originally drawn in USD, but the French company was not permitted tocover forward for any length of time.
They would have to buy the necessary USD to pay the bill.
H:I see.
R:So we bought currency for the customer and our customer could then work out his price inFrench francs instead of US dollars.
H:Fine. OK, I think we've covered everything now, haven't we?
R:Yes, I think so. It was good of you to see me.
H:My pleasure. Thank you for answering me so many questions.
I'm sure we'll buy your service in the near future.
R:Thank you.
E:We've seen the income before our coffee break; now let's look at the outgoings.
V:What is the largest amount of money you spent in 1994?
E:Obviously, the largest of these is staff costs.
It increased from fifty-five million dollars in the fiscal 1993 to sixty-five million dollars at theend of 1994.
It covers forty-two per cent in the total group outgoings.
V:Why is the increase as large as eighteen per cent?
E:It is partly because of the increase in staff numbers required to deal with the expansion ofthe bank's fee-generating activities which I have just mentioned in the income section.
V:How about doubtful debt provision and depreciation?
E:Provisions for doubtful debts amounted to eight million dollars,
an increase of sixty per cent;
增長(zhǎng)了60% 。
while depreciation on leased assets and on premises and equipment decreased from sixteenmillion dollars to fifteen million dollars.
V:Is depreciation calculated on a straight line basis?
E:Yes, that' how we calculate depreciation.
V:Besides the largest of outgoings, staff costs, as well as provision for doubtful debts anddepreciation,
how about expenses, on tax, dividends?
E:Tax, not much to say really. We paid five million dollars more than in 1993.
That is, we paid up to twenty-five million dollars in the financial year of 1994.
As for dividends paid to our shareholders,
they remained unchanged over the previous fiscal year at five million dollars.
V:How so?
E:Because the major part of the year's profit was retained to expand our consolidated capitalbase.
This was the first year in which our balance sheet footings passed the three billion dollars mark.
V:In addition, is there any sharp increase in other costs?
E:No. On the contrary, other expenses increased by only a little under seventeen per cent.
That's the smallest annual increase since 1989.
Personally, I think it illustrates our determination to bring costs under control.
V:What's your yearly profit after paying dividends to shareholders?
E:After allocation of the dividends, there remained a net undistributed balance for the year ofnine million dollars.
The total amount was transferred to reserves to cover unexpected events.
V:So as your annual report indicates, all this adds up to total group outgoings of one hundredand fifty-five million dollars.
E:Yes,the figure of total group outgoings exactly balances out with the total income.
V:Now, we have a clearer picture of the source of income and the application of income foryour bank in 1994 compared with 1993.
E:I'm glad to give you some information about my bank.
The diagram in your hand is a copy of our last annual report.
V:Yes, it gives key figures relating to your bank's activities and financial performance during1994.
Dr. Edwards. Would you please first give us a very short description of your performance lastyear?
E:Fine. As of December 31st 1994, the Northland's ZB Bank Corporation was the sixth largestin USA,
based on stockholders' equity, and the seventh largest based on deposits.
The bank has more than 980 offices around the world.
V:You have an office in Beijing, don't you?
E:Yes, that's right. Actually, we have three offices in China.
We established our offices first in Beijing, then in Shanghai and in Guangzhou.
We're thinking of opening another two in Tianjin and Suzhou next year.
V:That's terrific. I'm from Suzhou, which is developing rapidly.
E:Really? I hope we will discuss the financial situation in Suzhou sometime later on.
V:I'd like to if I can be of any help.
E:Now, let's begin with income of our bank last year.
V:Your total group income in 1994 amounted to one hundred and fifty-five million US dollarscompared with one hundred and thirty-five million US dollars for fiscal 1993.
That's an increase of...
增長(zhǎng)了....
E:Of nearly fifteen per cent over the year before last,
a rate of increase slightly above that of recent years.
V:Your net interest earning at the end of 1994 reached ninetynine million dollars.
E:That's exact good news for us. In the financial year 1994,
interest received amounted to six hundred and fifteen million dollars and interest paid to fivehundred and sixteen million.
V:So, that's almost ten per cent up over the 1993 figure.
E:Yes, the net interest income is pretty satisfactory indeed,
in what is, as you know, an intensely competitive market.
V:Oh, you also achieved a significant increase in non-interest income.
E:Yes, our non-interest income increases from forty-six million in 1993 to fifty-six million dollarsat the end of the fiscal year 1994.
You know, a part of the bank's policy is to limit dependence on net interest as a source ofincome and to develop its fee and commission earning activities.
So 1994 income in this area accounted for a two per cent higher contribution to total incomethan was the case in 1993.
V:Yes, this is really an encouraging trend since the economic environment in general ischanging.
It also shows your response to the sensitivity of interest rates in particular.
E:Due to non-interest income of fifty-six million dollars,
our total group income in 1994 was twenty million dollars higher than the pervious financialyear.
