Li Lida, a 12-year-old schoolboy, first tried to cross the Qiongzhou Chanel in June, 2000. But he failed after swimming for 12 hours. On May 17,2001,on his 13th birthday, his dream came true. He became the youngest person ever to cross the channel between Hainan Island and the mainland.

The boy set off at 6:20 in the morning. Three men swam with him. Li was swimming quite fast before 10:30. Then he slowed down as the wind became stronger and the waves higher. During the crossing he ate some food and had several drinks. By 2p.m. he could see a high building in Haikou. He went on swimming for another two hours before he finished his journey.

Many people were waiting for him on the beach. Among them were his parents. They were proud of their son. His teacher, Mr. Feng, spoke highly of his student.

  W: Hi, Dad! I’m back.

  M: Hm…

W: Dad, what book are you reading?

M: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

W: Who wrote it? It must be very interesting.

M: Yeah, it is interesting. It was written by Mark Twain. He was a great American writer and

  speaker.

  W: Who is that man?

M: Are you joking? You don’t know him? The famous footballer, Pele.

W: Oh? The world’s most famous football player?

M: Yes. One of the best ones from Brazil. You know, David Beckham, Maradona and Pele are my

  favorites.

M: I have some problems with listening and comprehension.

W: But can you understand me?

M: Yes, conversational talks are OK, but I am referring to reading books, and understanding my

  teacher’s instructions.

W: Oh, don’t worry. I will help you. First, for listening, you can ask the other person to speak

slowly, so that you can hear it clearly. Or, you can communicate more, and try to listen to the other person when they’re speaking. Like me, I am speaking slowly. Also, try to speak faster. M: Thanks, what about comprehension?

W: You have to read more books, magazines, watch TV, and use context, always. When you don't

understand anything, you have to identify the word, or phrase you don’t understand. If it's a word, find out its definition and put it into a context. If it’s a phrase, ask for help from other people and it might help.

M: Thanks a million! It helps!

  W: No problem.

On 15 October 2003, the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft flew around the Earth 14 times. The space flight lasted 21 hours and the 38-year-old astronaut landed safely at 6:23 a.m. the next day in Inner Mongolia. China is now the third country, after the Soviet Union and the USA, to send a person into space.

Yang Liwei was born in Liaoning in 1965 and in 1987 he joined the Chinese Air Force and became a pilot. 11 years later, he joined the Chinese space programme with 13 other pilots. He trained for five years to be an astronaut. He was one of the best astronauts in the team.

People on earth watched Yang Liwei’s space flight on TV. He waved to everyone on earth and showed the Chinese national flag. Today he’s China’s first astronaut, and a national hero.

Jay Chou is a popular Taiwanese musician and singer. I am a big fan of his. He is popular with the young because he is successful in music and films. Jay was good at playing the piano when he was very young. He was only nineteen when he became a singer of pop music. His first album surprised many people with his special way of singing. I like his music because his songs are totally different from those of others’. Everyone thinks he is a talent. I really love him and his

music. Besides music, he entered the film industry in 2005. Since then he has acted in three movies, directed one film and made many music videos.
