　　紅樓夢故事:三姐自刎

　　This is a story from A Dream of Red Mansions. Third Sister You， a very pretty and strongcharacter， was the sister of jia Zhen's wife. When Jia Zhen， a play boy by nature， was tiredof his wife， his eyes fell on the beautiful Third Sister. Collaborasted with his cousin Jia Lianthey tried to seduce the girl， only to be met with a harsh telling-off. The two playboys，scared by this virtuous but unyielding girl， tried to marry her off as soon as possible. Whenthe Third Sister fell in love with LiuXianglian， an actor who had once played opera in theresidence， her sister， Jia Zhen's wife， told her that the young man had left town. But theThird Sister was determined."I'll wait for him， one year or ten， it doesn's matter，" shesaid."And if he dies I'll shave my hair and become a mun." On a business trip in the capital， JiaLian chanced to meet Liu. Jia told Liu of the Third Sister's wish. Liu aired his willingness on thespot. He asken Jia to give his mandarin duck sword to the girl as a token of his betrothal.Feeling assured of her marriage and future， every day the girl looked several timesaffectionately at the sword she had hung by her bed. A few months later， Liu returned. Whenhe saw the girl's beautiful looks， he grew suspicious of her virtue."The men in the Jia familyare all promiscuous，" he thought."Why would this girl fall in love with me when she and I havenever met?" He stepped back on the betrothal on a pretext that his aunt had betrothed him tosombody else and he came to retrieve his sword. Third sister knew what was on his mind.Heart bleeding， she took the sword from the wall， unsheathed it and committed suicidebefore Liu， an act to show her virtue and unyieldingness. The regretful young man criedbitterly over her corpse. He spent the rest of his life as a priest in a Taoist temple.

　　As jia baoyu， Xue Baoqin， Xing youyanand Ping'er had birthdays on the same day， theyoung ladies held a hilarious drinking party in the hall of the peony garden for them. When itwas Xiangyun's turn to compose a verse amid a drinking game， she made fun of the servicemaids by saying， holding a duck head in hand， "This ya tou (referring to the duck head inhand) is not that ya tou (referring to the service maids around， as both are homophones inChinese)， for this ya tou has applied no hair oil…." Everybody roared with laughter. Someservice maids protested， laughing， "You made fun of us， so you have to drink another cup.Let's pour a full cup her…." As the party went on drinkers' games continued with ceaselesslaughter and people suddenly noticed that Xiangyun had disappeared. While they looked thisway and that， a serice maid rushed in laughing， "Young ladies. Hurry to have a look at theLady Xiangyun. She's sleeping on the stone bench over there." The group tiptoed over， andsure enough， saw Xiangyun sleeping soundly. Fallen flowers scattered on her body， her hairand her face. Her fan had dropped on the ground aside. Bees danced in the air around her.Under her head was a make-shift pillow of peony flowers wrapped with her handkerchief. Amidlaughter service girls gently woke her up and helped her-she was still mumbling somethingdrunkenly-get inside the room.

　　賈寶玉、薛寶琴、邢岫煙、平兒四人同一天過生日。眾小姐帶上自己的丫頭們借機在芍藥欄中紅香圃三間小敞廳內(nèi)飲酒行令，一時敞廳內(nèi)熱鬧非凡。輪到香云說酒令時，她想拿丫頭們?nèi)⌒?，他喝了一口酒，夾了一個鴨頭，舉起來說："這鴨頭不是那丫頭，頭上沒有桂花油。"眾人笑了起來，惹得晴雯等一幫丫頭說："云姑娘拿我們開心，快罰她喝酒。"大家都來敬酒，一時猜拳行令，呼三喝四，過了一會，大家突然發(fā)現(xiàn)湘云不見了，比各處去找。不一會，一個小丫頭笑嘻嘻跑來說："姑娘們?？烊タ纯?，云姑娘吃醉了，在山石后面石凳上睡著了。"眾人聽后，便輕輕走過去，果然看到湘云在石凳上已入夢鄉(xiāng)，四面的芍藥花飛落了一身，滿身滿頭都是花瓣。扇子落在地上，也被花瓣埋了一半。一群蜜蜂蝴蝶在她周圍飛舞。湘云枕著用手帕抱著花瓣的枕頭。眾人看了又是愛，又是笑，忙上來推喚攙扶。湘云仍酒醉不醒，還嘟嘟嚕嚕地說著，眾人笑著推醒她，用這湘云回屋里去了。

　　An explorer, a farmer in the forest is seen sitting on the smoking tree stump bucket, and he stepped forward to say hello: "Hello, what do you here?"
