  The Remembrance of Lilacs

The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling a little melancholy on that Sunday in May. After all, it was Mother's Day -- and 800 miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.

She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother's Day, and her mother had mentioned the colorful yard filled with purple lilacs.

Later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he popped up from his chair. "I know where we can find you all you want, "he said. "Get the kids and come on. "So off they went.

Before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. Soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top. There were the towering lilacs bushes, so laden with the huge flower clusters.

Carefully, the young woman chose a sprig here, another one there. Finally, they returned to their car for the trip home.

When they were within three miles of home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, "Stop the car. Stop right here!" the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the lilacs still in her arms. At the top of the hill was a nursing home and the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch.

The young woman went to the end of the porch, where an elderly patient was sitting in her wheelchair, alone, head bowed. Across the porch railing went the flowers, in to the lap of the old woman. She lifted her head, and smiled. For a few moments, the two women chatted, both aglow with happiness, and then the young woman turned and ran back to her family.

"Mom, "the kids asked, "who was that? Why did you give her our flowers? "The mother said she didn't know the old woman. But it was Mother's Day, and she seemed so alone, "Besides, "she added, "I have all of you, and I still have my mother, even if she is far away. That woman needed those flowers more than I did. The next day the husband purchased half a dozen young lilac bushes and planted them around their yard.

I was that man. The young mother was, and is, my wife. Now, every Mother's Day our kids gather purple bouquets. And every year I remember that smile on a lonely old woman's face, and the kindness that put the smile there.

No matter what happens, I'll always be there for you!

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: "No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!" "My daughter!" Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there s nothing you can do!"

To each parent he responded with one line: "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school s ruins saying, "Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home." To which this loving, caring American father asked, "Are you going to help me now?"

The police came and said, "You’re angry, anxious and it s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!" To which he replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.

Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son s voice. He screamed his son s name, "ARMAND!" He heard back, "Dad!?! It s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you d save me and when you saved me, they d be saved. You promised, No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you! You did it, Dad!" "What s going on in there? How is it?" the father asked.

"There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We’re scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you re here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us."

  "Come out, boy!"

"No, Dad! Let the other kids out first, cause I know you ll get me! No matter what happens, I know you’ll always be there for me!"

The Exact Price of a Miracle for Little Brother

Tess was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money to pay for very costly surgery.

She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar .She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to the pharmacy.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice, “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages. ” He continued.

"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” "I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now.

"We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist’s brother stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” "I don’t know.” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.

"I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. "How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered. "Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents — the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. " He grasped her hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents.”

That man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a famous surgeon.

The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events. “That surgery,” her Mom whispered, “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?” Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.
