The Sleeping Princess 睡美人
I
Once there was a Kingand a Queen. For many years they had wanted a child， and no child had come tothem.
Then the Queen had achild. It was a girl. The King was very glad.
You know what a fairyis. Many fairies lived near the King’s house. When the Queen’s child came， theKing went to all the fairies and said， “The Queen has a child. Do come tothe house and see our new little girl.” All the fairies said， “We arevery glad： we will come today .”
One of the fairies hadgone away on a journey： she had been very far away. She had not come back whenthe Queen’s child came. When she came back， one of the fairies said to her，“The Queen has a child， and the King came to us and said， ”Come andsee our new little girl. “”
But this fairy was abad fairy; the bad fairy said， “The King went to all of you： why did henot come to me? I shall go and see the King’s child; but I shall give her somebad thing.”
All the good fairieswent to the King’s house， and saw the little girl; and they all gave her somegood thing. One said， “I give her this good thing： she shall haveriches.” One fairy said， “I give her this good thing; she shallbecome a brave woman.” One said， “I give her this good thing： sheshall become a good woman.” All gave some good thing.
Then there came thebad fairy. She said， “The King went to all the fairies but he did not cometo me， so I shall give the child some bad thing. She will have riches; she willbecome brave; she will become good. But， when she is a woman， she will prick herhand with a needle， and die.”
The poor Queen did notknow what to do. The King said to the good fairies， “The poor girl shallnot die. Can you not help me? Say that she shall not die!” The goodfairies said， “ We cannot help you. What the bad fairy has said will come.Your child will prick her hand with a needle; but she shall not die. She shallsleep for many years. Then a king’s son shall come and kiss her. And she willawake. He shall wake her with a kiss.” Then the fairies went away.
The King sent for allhis men and all the Queen’s women， and said， “Go and bring me all theneedles that are in the house.”
They brought all theneedles that they could find， and the King took them， and threw them into ariver far away.
Then he said，“See that no needle comes into this house. See that no man and no womanbrings a needle near my child. I shall kill them if they do.”

好的仙女們來到了王宮，見到了小女孩，她們大家都給她說了些吉利的話。一位說：“我給她這樣吉利的話：她一定會(huì)發(fā)財(cái)。”一位說：“我給她這樣吉利的話：她一定會(huì)成為一位勇敢的女性。”一位說：“我給她這樣吉利的話：她一定會(huì)成為一名好女人。”大家都說了些吉利的話。
然后，壞仙女來到這里，她說：“國王去告訴了所有的仙女，他就是不來告訴我。所以，我要給小孩咒一些壞事。她會(huì)發(fā)財(cái)，會(huì)成為一名勇敢的女性，也會(huì)成為一名好女人。但是，當(dāng)她成年后，她將用針刺破手而死去。”
可憐的王后不知道如何是好。國王對(duì)那些好仙女說：“這可憐的女孩子不能死，你們不能幫助我嗎?求你們說一聲她不會(huì)死去!”
好的仙女們說：“我們不能幫助您，壞仙女所預(yù)言的必將應(yīng)驗(yàn)，你的孩子將會(huì)用針刺破手，但是，她不一定死，她要沉睡很多年。然后，有一位王子會(huì)來吻她，她將會(huì)醒來。他的吻會(huì)把她喚醒。”然后，仙女們走了。
國王叫來他的所有男仆和王后的所有女仆，說：“去把房間里所有的針都給我搜羅來。”他們?nèi)グ阉心軌蛘业降尼樁寄脕砹耍缓?，國王拿著這些針，把它們?nèi)拥胶苓h(yuǎn)的一條河里去了。

The little child grewup in the King’s house. She became a Princess. The Princess wanted to see allthat she could. She wanted to know what the men were doing in the garden. Shewanted to know the names of all the flowers and of all the trees. She said tothe men in the King’s garden， “What is the name of this flower? What isthe name of this tree?” In the house she wanted to see all that there wasto see.
She wanted to know howmany rooms there were in the King’s house， and who lived in all the rooms. Soshe went into one room， and then into another room， and then into another. Shewent into big rooms and little rooms， and very little rooms. Then she said，“I have been to all the rooms in the house.” But there was one roomwhere she had not gone.
As she went on， shecame to a new room. It was a little room very far away from all the otherrooms. The door of the room was shut. The Princess wanted to go in and see whatwas in this room. She called， “Open the door!” But no one came. Shecalled once. She called twice; then the door was opened. The Princess went intothe room： and there she saw a very old woman.
The old woman wassitting near a table. On the table there was some cloth. The old woman had somecloth in one hand， and in the other hand she had a needle.
The Princess said，“What are you doing?”
“I am makingsomething，” said the old woman.
“What are youmaking?” said the Princess.
“I am making someclothes，” said the old woman.
“What is that in yourhand?” said the Princess.
“That is thecloth，” said the old woman.
“No!” saidthe Princess. “What is that in your other hand?”
“That?” saidthe old woman. “That is a needle.”
The Princess said，“Give me the ’needle’; I want to see it. I have not seen a needle. I donot know what a needle is.”
The old woman said，“Have you not seen a needle? How can that be? You have seen many needles!Needles are seen in all houses.”
The old woman gave theneedle to the Princess.
“Give me thecloth，” said the Princess： ’I want to make clothes.“ Then the oldwoman gave the Princess the cloth.
The Princess prickedthe cloth with the needle ——but she pricked her hand. And she fell asleep!
Then all the men andthe women in the house fell asleep. The King fell asleep at his table， and theQueen sitting near him fell asleep.
The man in the gardenfell asleep with his axe in his hand. The man standing at the door of the housefell asleep where he stood. All were asleep.
A fairy came to thePrincess. She took her and put her on a bed. Then the fairy said to the treesand to the flowers in the garden， “ Grow!” The flowers grew up， andthe trees grew big. There was a wall of trees and flowers. So no one could gointo the house.
In the house thePrincess slept; and the King slept， and all his men; and the Queen， and herwomen， slept.

小女孩在王宮里長大了，她成為一名公主。凡是能看到的東西，公主都想看看。她想知道在花園里的人正在干什么;她要知道所有的樹木和花的名字。在花園里她問花匠：“這是朵什么花?這是棵什么樹?”凡是房子里能夠見到的她都要看看。
她要知道王宮里有多少間房間，所有的房間都有誰住著，她一間接一間的進(jìn)去看看，她進(jìn)了大房間、小房間和很小的房間。然后，她說：“我已經(jīng)走遍了這所房子里的所有房間。”但是，有一間屋子她沒有去過。
她繼續(xù)走，來到一間陌生的屋子，這間小屋子離其它房間很遠(yuǎn)。這間屋的門關(guān)著，公主要進(jìn)去看看這間屋子里有什么。她就喊：“開門!”但沒人出來，她喊了一遍后，又喊了一遍，這時(shí)門打開了，公主走進(jìn)屋里，在這里她發(fā)現(xiàn)一位很老的老太太。
老太太正坐在桌子旁，桌子上有一些布，老太太一手拿著一些布，另一只手拿著一枚針。
公主問：“你在做什么?”
“我正在做活兒，”老太太說。
“你在做什么活兒?”公主問。
“我正在做衣服，”老太太說。
“你手里拿著什么?”公主問。
“那是布，”老太太說。
“不是!”公主說，“另一只手里是什么?”
“這?”老太太說，“這是一枚針。”
公主說：“把’針’給我，我要看看它，我沒有見過針，不知道針是什么。”
老太太說：“你從沒有見過針?那怎么可能呢?你見過的針多著哩!家家戶戶都可以見到針。”
老太太把針給了公主。
“把布給我，”公主說，“我要做衣服。”這時(shí)，老太太把布給了公主。
公主用針扎布——然而，她刺了自己的手，接著她睡過去了。
然后，房子里的男男女女都睡著了。國王趴在桌上睡著了，王后坐在他身旁睡著了。
在花園里的花匠拿著斧頭睡著了，大門旁的門房站著睡著了，所有的人都睡著了。
一位仙女來到公主面前，她抱起公主，把她放在床上。然后，仙女對(duì)花園里的樹和花說：“快長!”花兒長起來了，樹兒長大了，于是出現(xiàn)了一堵由樹和花組成的墻。這樣，沒有人能走進(jìn)這所房子了。
在這所房子里，公主睡著，國王王后睡著，男仆女仆也都睡著。

Many wanted to go intothe house of the Sleeping Princess; but they could not go through the trees. Sono one came.
Years went by， and thePrincess slept. Many years went by， and men did not know what the house was andwho was in it. The trees grew up; you could not see the house through thetrees. Men went by the trees and did not know that there was a house there.
One day a King rodeinto the forest. His son was with him. The King and his men went far in front，and the King’s son could not find them. He rode on， and he came to a wall oftrees and flowers. He said， “My father has gone through those trees： Iwill go through them and find him.”
As he came to the wallof trees， it opened， and he went through. Then he saw a garden; but all theflowers had grown here and there as they wanted.
He came to a house.The door was open， a man was standing by the door asleep. the King’s son said，“What a lazy man， he sleeps standing!” He went into the house. Mensat at the table， with food in their hands， asleep.
A little boy had beenreading a story： he had fallen asleep with his head on his arms. A woman hadbeen putting on her shoes; she was asleep with one shoe on and one shoe in herhand. An old man sat with pen and paper， asleep; and the dust of years was onhis paper. Near him a woman was asleep with her little child asleep in herarms.
The King’s son wentfrom one room to another. He saw the old King asleep at his table， and near himthe Queen asleep with her head in her hands. Then he came to a room where therewas sunlight and flowers. The window was open and roses had grown in through thewindow into the room. Golden light came through the window and fell upon a bed.The Princess was on the bed. Her eyes were shut. She was asleep.
The King’s son kissedher. She awoke. Then all the house awoke. The man awoke at the door. The menawoke and ate the food in their hands. The woman awoke and put on her shoe. Theboy awoke and read his story. The King awoke at his table. The Queen rubbed hereyes， and said， “What were you saying， my King. I fell asleep.”
The Princess wasmarried by the King’s son， and they became King and Queen.

許多人想進(jìn)入睡美人的房子，但是，人們穿不過樹墻，所以沒有一個(gè)人來過。
年復(fù)一年，公主長眠不醒。很多年過去了，人們不知道這所房子里發(fā)生了什么事情，不知道誰住在里面。樹兒長高了，你通過樹叢看不到房子，人們從樹叢旁走過，不曉得這里有一座房子。
一天，一位國王騎馬進(jìn)了森林，王子也隨同他前往。國王和他的仆人在前面走得很遠(yuǎn)(把王子拋在后面)，王子找不到他們了。王子騎著騎著，來到了花樹墻前，心想：“父王已經(jīng)穿過那片樹叢，我要穿過去，找到他們。”
他走到樹墻前，樹叢打開了一條路，他穿了過去。這時(shí)，他發(fā)現(xiàn)一個(gè)花園，然而，所有的花草卻長得雜亂無章，遍地皆是。
他來到一座房子前，門開著，一個(gè)男人正站在門旁睡著，王子說：“多懶的人啊，他站著都睡著了!”他走進(jìn)房屋，一些人坐在桌旁，手里拿著吃的睡著。

王子吻了她，她醒了過來。隨即整座房子里的人都醒了。門口的人醒了;一些手里拿著吃的人醒了;婦女醒了，穿上了她的鞋;男孩醒了，看他的故事。在桌旁的國王醒了，王后揉了揉眼睛，說：“國王，你剛才說什么來著?我睡著了。”

Human Resource： Heaven and Hell
人力資源的天堂與地獄
One day while walking down the street a highly successful HR Director was tragically hit by a bus and she died. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter himself.
某一天，一位非常成功的人力資源主管在街道行走時(shí)慘遭公車碰撞而死。她的靈魂升到天堂，在天國之門她看到了圣彼得。
“Welcome to Heaven，” said St. Peter. “Before you get settled in though， it seems we have a problem. You see， strangely enough， we’ve never once had a Human Resources Director make it this far and we’re not really
sure what to do with you.“
“歡迎來到天堂，”圣彼得說道，“在你沒安頓之前，我們還有個(gè)問題。你看，非常奇怪的是，目前還沒有一個(gè)人力資源主管能升到這么高的，所以我們還不能確定如何解決這個(gè)問題。”
“No problem， just let me in，” said the woman. “Well， I’d like to，”replied St. Peter， “but I have higher orders. What we’re going to do is let you have a day in Hell and a day in Heaven and then you can choose whichever one you want to spend an eternity in.”
“還有什么問題呀，就讓我進(jìn)來不就成了。”女人說。“當(dāng)然我很想這樣做，”圣彼得回答道，“但是我有更高的指令。這樣吧，我們允許你在天堂和地獄分別待一天，然后再來由你自己決定哪個(gè)地方安度來世。”
“Actually， I think I’ve made up my mind， I prefer to stay in Heaven，”said the woman.

“Sorry， we have rules……” And with that St. Peter put the executive in an elevator and it went down-down-down to hell.

The doors opened and she found herself stepping out onto the putting green of a beautiful golf course. In the distance was a country club and standing in front of her were all her friends - fellow executives that she had worked with and they were all dressed in evening gowns and cheering for her.
門打開了，她發(fā)現(xiàn)自己踏上了一片碧綠的高爾夫球場。遠(yuǎn)處隱約可見一個(gè)鄉(xiāng)村俱樂部，她的一些老朋友和人力資源的同事們身著晚禮服，向她歡呼。
They ran up and kissed her on both cheeks and they talked about old times. They played an excellent round of golf and at night went to the country club where she enjoyed an excellent steak and lobster dinner. She met the Devil who was actually a really nice guy (kinda cute) and she had agreat time telling jokes and dancing. She was having such a good time that before she knew it， it was time to leave. Everybody shook her hand and waved good-bye as she got on the elevator. The elevator went up-up-up and opened back up at the Pearly Gates and she found St. Peter waiting for her.
朋友們都向她跑來，吻她的雙頰，一起緬懷美好的舊時(shí)光。打了一圈漂亮的高爾夫后，他們帶她到鄉(xiāng)村俱樂部里享用了美味的牛排和龍蝦。在那里她還見到了魔鬼撒旦，發(fā)現(xiàn)他其實(shí)也挺可愛。說著笑話，跳著舞曲，歡樂的時(shí)光竟然如此快地就要結(jié)束了。在踏上電梯前時(shí)，朋友們和她一一握手告別。電梯升啊升，重新回到了天國之門，她發(fā)現(xiàn)圣彼得正在門口等她。
“Now it’s time to spend a day in heaven，” he said. So she spent the next 24 hours lounging around on clouds and playing the harp and singing. She had a great time and before she knew it her 24 hours were up and St.Peter came and got her. “So， you’ve spent a day in hell and you’ve spent a day in heaven. Now you must choose your eternity，” he said. The woman paused for a second and then replied， “Well， I never thought I’d say this， I mean， Heaven has been really great and all， but I think I had a better time in Hell.” So St. Peter escorted her to the elevator and again she went down-down-down back to Hell.
“現(xiàn)在是時(shí)間開始你的天堂之旅了，”他說。于是她慵懶的躺在云端，撩撥著豎琴，放聲歌唱。愉快的一天又要結(jié)束了，圣彼得來到她面前，“你已經(jīng)在天堂和地獄分別度過了一天，現(xiàn)在可以選擇你的歸宿了，”他說道。女人停頓了一會(huì)兒回答道，“我從沒想到自己會(huì)這樣說，嗯，天堂的確不錯(cuò)，但是我認(rèn)為在地獄的時(shí)光更快樂。”于是圣彼得把她送到了下往地獄的電梯口。她就這樣降啊降，回到了地獄。
When the doors of the elevator opened she found herself standing in a desolate wasteland covered in garbage and filth. She saw her friends were dressed in rags and were picking up the garbage and putting it in sacks. The Devil came up to her and put his arm around her.
但梯門打開時(shí)，她發(fā)現(xiàn)自己站在一個(gè)荒涼的廢墟里，滿處都是垃圾和污穢。她看到自己的那些朋友們竟然穿著破爛不堪，正在將垃圾撿到麻袋里。撒旦向她走來，伸手摟住了她。
“I don’t understand，” stammered the woman， “yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a country club and we ate lobster and we danced and had a great time. Now all there is， is a wasteland of garbage and all my friends look miserable.”The Devil looked at her and smiled. “Yesterday we were recruiting you，today you’re staff……”
“我不明白，”女人結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地說，“昨天我在這的時(shí)候，還是一片高爾夫球場，還有鄉(xiāng)村俱樂部，我們還吃了龍蝦，唱歌跳舞，非?？鞓?。但現(xiàn)在這里卻只剩下一片廢墟，垃圾遍地，我的那些朋友們也痛苦不堪。”魔鬼看著她，笑道，“昨天我們在這里招聘新人，今天你已經(jīng)成為我們的一員了……”

Do I Need To Like Myself?
Yes! People who don't like themselves are a pain in the neck!
Usually, people with a poor self-image use one of two irritating strategies. They either:
a) criticize you a lot or
b) they criticize themselves a lot.
STRATEGY A: They criticize you a lot. They figure that by criticizing other people they can feel better about themselves.
Let's take Fred, who feels inferior. Fred thinks he has a big nose and piggy eyes. He also secretly feels a bit stupid.
So what's his strategy to feel better about himself? He criticizes all his friends. He has names for them like “Flathead”, “Chicken Legs” and “Dogbrain”. Whenever someone else makes a mistake, he announces it to the whole class. (He probably doesn't even realize he criticizes people—or why he does it.)
If you have parents, friends or brothers and sisters who don't like themselves—they might criticize you and everyone around them. Just remember that they criticize you because they have a problem. If you remember that they are actually hurting inside, you won't get so upset by their behaviour.
STRATEGY B: Some people who don't like themselves criticize themselves a lot. They use reverse psychology...
Take Mary who doesn't like herself. She's always telling you, “You are prettier than me. You are smarter. Nobody likes me.” She's hoping that you will reply, “No Mary! You are clever. You are beautiful.” After a while, people like Mary get on your nerves!
In a nutshell
When we don't like ourselves, we irritate other people. We also put ourselves through a lot of stress. When we accept ourselves a little better, we don't play these games.
How Can I Like Myself﹖
In our hearts, most of us believe we should be doing better. We think that we should have gotten higher grades. We want to be popular and hang out with the “in” crowd. We feel we don't measure up to our parents' expectations. Our parents help to confirm this idea when they ask, “Why can't you be more like your brother?”
Whenever you are feeling low, be your own best friend. Accept that, up to now, you have lived your life the best way you know how. No one sets out to screw up their life! Like anyone, you've done the odd stupid thing. With more information you'll likely do better in the future.
Liking yourself means forgiving yourself. If you have made some serious mistakes, if you have hurt some people—and yourself—feeling guilty won't help.
If you are feeling guilty about something, you have already suffered enough. Being guilty for another six months won't help anybody.
Forget perfection and aim for improvement.
It's a funny thing. When you forgive yourself for your own mistakes, you automatically begin to let others off the hook for the same things.
“But I'm Not Brilliant...”
You might look at yourself and say, “I'm not as beautiful as my sister, I'm not as talented as my friends and I'm not brilliant at anything! How can I feel good about me?”
Fact: Nobody is good at everything and most of us have those thoughts!
But here's the lowdown! Talent and beauty are very useful—but there are plenty of talented and beautiful people around whom we don't necessarily admire. And some of them are a pan in the butt!
The qualities most of us value above all others are honesty, courage, persistence, generosity and humility. Take a look at this list and you'll find something interesting. You aren't born with these things. You develop them. Anyone can have them! If you want self-respect, and respect from others, you don't have to be an Einstein or a super-model.
You simply work at developing your own honesty, determination, generosity, humility and courage. It is called “character”.

如果你父母、朋友或兄弟姊妹不喜歡自己，他們可能挑剔你和身邊的每一個(gè)人。請(qǐng)記住，他們挑剔你是因?yàn)樗麄冇袉栴}。其實(shí)他們內(nèi)心有傷痛，記住這一點(diǎn)，你就不會(huì)對(duì)他們的行為感到特別心煩了。
策略二：有些不喜歡自己的人老說自己不好。他們的心理正好相反。
拿瑪麗來說吧，她就不喜歡自己。她總對(duì)別人說，“你比我漂亮。你比我聰明。誰都不喜歡我。”她心里其實(shí)希望對(duì)方這樣回答，“不對(duì)，瑪麗!你很聰明，很漂亮。”不用多久，瑪麗這種人就會(huì)令人生厭。
簡言之
不喜歡自己，就會(huì)去煩別人。同時(shí)自身也會(huì)承受很大的壓力。對(duì)自己好一點(diǎn)，就不會(huì)去玩那些煩人的把戲了。
怎樣才能喜歡自己?
內(nèi)心里，大多數(shù)人都認(rèn)為自己應(yīng)該比現(xiàn)在強(qiáng)。我們認(rèn)為考試分?jǐn)?shù)應(yīng)該再高一些。我們想受人歡迎，跟那些“時(shí)髦的”人在一起。我們感到達(dá)不到父母的期望。父母也證實(shí)了這一點(diǎn)。他們會(huì)問，“你就不能向你哥哥多學(xué)一點(diǎn)?”
無論何時(shí)你感覺不良，你要做自己最親密的朋友。要承認(rèn)到目前為止，你是在以你所知的最佳方式生活。誰都不會(huì)成心破壞自己的生活。你跟別人一樣做了些奇怪而愚蠢的事。你如果知道得多一些，將來就會(huì)做得好一些。
喜歡自己意味著原諒自己。如果你犯了嚴(yán)重的錯(cuò)誤，如果你傷害了別人，傷害了自己，內(nèi)疚是不管用的。
如果你為某事感到內(nèi)疚，你已經(jīng)受到了足夠的折磨。再內(nèi)疚半年，對(duì)人對(duì)己都無濟(jì)于事。
忘記完善，立志改善
這是很有趣的一件事。一旦你原諒自己的過錯(cuò)，就會(huì)自動(dòng)不再追究別人同樣的錯(cuò)誤。
“但是我不很出色……”
你也許會(huì)將自己審視一番，說，“我沒姐姐那么漂亮，也沒朋友那么聰明，我哪方面都不出色!叫我怎么感覺良好?”
事實(shí)是：沒有誰是萬能的，而且大多數(shù)人都有你這種想法。
不過真相是這樣的!才智和美貌很有用，但是聰明漂亮的人我們并不一定就羨慕，這樣的人在我們周圍大有人在。再說有些人不過是徒有虛名而已!
大多數(shù)人最看重的品質(zhì)是誠實(shí)、勇敢、頑強(qiáng)、慷慨和謙遜。只要看看這一串詞語，就能發(fā)現(xiàn)一件有趣的事。這些品質(zhì)不是與生俱來的，是后天培養(yǎng)的。人人都能擁有!想自重并受人尊重，不一定非得是愛因斯坦或超級(jí)名模。
你只需努力培養(yǎng)自己的誠實(shí)、堅(jiān)毅、慷慨、謙遜和勇敢就行了。這就叫“品格”。
