A quick-thinking doctor saved the life of his pet tortoise after it nearly drowned - by giving itmouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

The eight-year-old reptile, Atlas, appeared to have drowned in his water bowl at BenWaterfall's home in Swimbridge, Devon.

The horrified family doctor saw the tortoise half submerged in the bowl and picked him up tofind he was not breathing.

Dr Waterfall had been tending his garden when he had walked past Atlas's run and noticed thathis pet was in serious trouble. He said: 'I saw his back feet sticking up out of the water. I pulledhim out but he was not breathing and was completely floppy.

'I did six minutes of mouth-to-mouth before he slowly started breathing and blinking.' Thedoctor, who works at a GP's surgery in Barnstaple, North Devon, admitted: 'I was quiteemotional at the time.

'I first started doing it and I had my mouth over his whole head, mouth, nose and nostrils. Then I changed it to sort of breathing into his nostrils. '

'He has a run outdoors which had some water in a concrete container about ten inches long -the same width as his shell. He had just fallen in. He was essentially dead.'

Dr Waterfall's wife Subhani had been putting the couple's two-year-old son Harry to bed whenher husband saved the life of their pet. The doctor told his son that Atlas had 'been swimming'because the boy was too young to understand what was really going on.

He said: 'When my wife came downstairs she said that Atlas is supposed to outlive us. He is notsupposed to die young at eight years old.' Tortoises generally have lifespans comparable withthose of human beings, and some have lived for more than 150 years.

The pet owner took Atlas to the vet to be checked out and he was given antibiotics in case hehad any water in his lungs.

'The guys at work think it is hilarious,' added the doctor. 'There is a mixture of laughter andthem kind of saying well done for giving it a go.'

Pet care is booming in emerging markets, as the growing middle class stops buying dogs for security (or dinner) and starts doting on them.

Nowhere has the fashion taken off as quickly as in Latin America.

In the past five years spending on pet food and knick-knacks has risen by 44%, to billion, according to Euromonitor, a market-research firm, which estimates that Chile has more pet dogs per person than any other country.

These "pet parents" indulge their animals as if they were children, says Emily Woon, Euromonitor's pet-care supremo, who reports that Latin America has been the "star market" of recent years.

Latinos are especially fond of dogs, which are costlier than cats, but superior in every respect.

Whereas in Europe the dog- and cat-food markets are equal, in Latin America dog food outsells cat food by nearly six to one.

  There is room for growth.

Many Latinos still feed their pets table scraps: three-quarters of Mexican hounds make do with leftover bits of burrito.

Billboards around Mexico City's parks urge owners to switch to Pedigree and other brands of delicious packaged pet food.

The most popular outlets are still small, independent pet shops, which retain customers by offering credit.

But the superstores will come. And when Latin animal-lovers can buy a full range of food, toys and veterinary services in one place, life could become even more luxurious for Mexico's privileged pets.
