How Do You Know About Football?

TEAMS Each soccer team has eleven players and three substitute, or reserve players. The team consists of a goalkeeper, defenders, midfield players, and forwards (or strikers). The object of the game is to get the ball into your opponent's goal.

THE MATCH A game of soccer is called a match and is split into two halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute break at halftime. A referee and two assistants make sure that nobody cheats or breaks the rules.

GOALKEEPING Goalkeeping is a special skill. While the rest of the team can afford to make mistakes, if the goalkeeper makes one, it usually results in a goal for the opposition. Above Your Head The best way to catch a ball above your head is by joining the thumbs and forefingers of your hands together so there is a small arch between your hands. Chest or Head Jump off one leg and cradle the ball comfortably to your chest. The ball should rest on your forearms, with your hands holding it from above. Left or Right Always try to get both hands behind the ball and hold on tight. As soon as you've caught it, bring the ball quickly into the safety of your body.

A Ball to Roll Around

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in Atlantic City and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. I can vaguely remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can do strange things to people.

It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don’t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.

Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy. I was bewildered and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me ——a potential to live, you might call it ——which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.

The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been able to do that, I would have collapsed and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person that somewhere in the sweeping, intricate pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.

It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the most elementary things. Once a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was mocking me and I was hurt. "I can’t use this," I said. "Take it with you," he urged me," and roll it around. "The words stuck in my head." Roll it around!" By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. AtPhiladelphia’sOverbrookSchoolfor the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it ground ball.

All my life I have set ahead of me a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.

高中必讀英語(yǔ)美文:絕妙方法激發(fā)你對(duì)生活的熱愛(ài)Great Ways to Generate Love for Your Life

  1. Be optimistic. Think of life in the best light, and find the better side of any situation. You would be amazed at how much more there is in life than the usual negative side.

  2. Live every present moment to the fullest. Don't waste a single second being sad, or bored, or even lonely. Get out and dance, and sing as if your life depends on it. You never know how long it is going to last.

  3. Be of service to others and forget about yourself. Always give more than you receive, and share with others. Do less for yourself, and more for the others around you. Also when you do the right thing you feel fantastic.

  4. Be kind to everyone. Kindness is the true key to unlocking your own happiness and joy. When others notice your kindness, they will pleasingly return it. Make as many friends as you can, and help them when they are down, as you never know when you will need them when times are hard.

  5. Be quiet and meditate on life. Sometimes just sit or stand somewhere peacefully and think about what you have achieved, what you are about to achieve, or what you want to achieve, and sometimes your mind will hit you. You will feel more respect for life.

  6. Try to laugh often. This is probably the most important point in this piece of writing. Laughter is the most important thing in life. Laugh frequently and smile often.

  7. Live in the present. Forget about the past, because there is nothing you can do about it. Don't worry about the future, as you build it with each present moment, and if you forget to live in the moment, you would be surprised at how quickly you'd missed the good times. 7.

  8. Do what you enjoy. If you have wanted to learn something, or seek improving on a skill you already have, just go for it! Don't let anyone stop you from doing what you love, and if you really feel comfortable doing it, then don't hold back. As if you do, you are going to regret it later.
