Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25, each year. For many, it's a day of merriment and giving of thanks, marked by gatherings with friends and family, shared meals and the exchange of gifts.
The Huffington Post editors asked readers around the world what Christmas means to them. Scroll below to read the best responses.
Every year, my family goes with two or three other families (usually families we have known for many years) to sing Christmas carols at the local nursing home. Many of the residents have very few family members who visit them. Some have no Christmas visitors and are very lonely. We have one friend who lives in the nursing home who joins us every year, making his way through the halls as we push him in his wheelchair.

"It is a way that my parents taught me to think of others before myself, especially during the very materialistic Christmas season. Jesus teaches us to welcome strangers and comfort those who mourn. What better time to live out His teachings than during Christmas?"

"I don't think of Christmas as being religious or non-religious, but rather as one of the few days where everyone can relax and snuggle up somewhere warm together (at least in the Northern hemisphere), and that is how I want it to be. Like, if just for that day, everyone could forget any hatred or sadness and just have kind sentiments."

In a survey of over 2.6 million engaged people, Facebook found that 30 per cent of them became engaged across November and December.
While Valentine's Day is traditionally known as the most romantic day of the year, and confirmed as the most popular day for dates - it is Christmas Eve that is deemed the best day for popping the question.
The date of choice could be for a number of reasons - the ability to give a Christmas present and engagement ring at once or perhaps, allow a year to plan ahead of a summer wedding.
And while the Christmas period may be the most popular time for those wanting to propose, it is not a preferred time when it comes to tying the knot.
In Australia, McCrindle research revealed Christmas Day has an average of just 37 weddings booked each year - a very large difference to the average 2,000 weddings taking place on Saturdays across the country.
And interestingly, a whopping average of 923 weddings occur on Australia Day.

Hoverboards were among the most popular Christmas gifts of2015. They may have also been the most dangerous gifts of 2015.
A true hoverboard looks like a skateboard without wheels. To "hover" means to float in the airwithout moving much in any direction. The popularity of hoverboards began in the 1980s, withthe "Back to the Future" movies. Characters in the second and third films used hoverboards astransportation.
This year's popular hoverboards, however, do not actually hover. They have wheels. And, as itturns out, they are not easy to use.
Adults and children around the world suffered hoverboard-related injuries over the weekend. Many posted pictures of the damage on social media. As a result, the hashtag #hoverboardfailstrended on Twitter.
Twitter user David Douglas posted a photo of both him and a young girl with casts for thebroken arms they suffered on Christmas Day.
And Twitter user Erin Rafferty tweeted a video of her mother falling off a hoverboard, with thecaption, "Who let mom on the hoverboard?"
Falling is not the only risk with some hoverboards. They are also a fire risk. At one store inTexas, an employee tried to fix a defective hoverboard a customer brought in. Thehoverboard then caught fire.
Studies suggest that some hoverboard brands have faulty batteries or plugs.
Many major airlines worldwide have banned hoverboards because of the fire risk. But somepassengers did not hear the news. Australian actor Russell Crowe tweeted on Monday about hisdisappointment that Virgin Australia Airlines did not permit his children to take theirhoverboards on the plane.
Major retailers are also taking steps to improve the safety of the hoverboards they sell. Amazonin the United States now only sells hoverboards from brands that have submitted safetystandard documents.
The UK's Amazon no longer sells actual hoverboards. It has also advised customers whobought unsafe brands of hoverboards to throw them away.
