The Most Romantic City -- Paris
Paris intrigues, astonishes, provokes, overwhelms... and gets under your skin. The City of Light is the apex of architectural beauty, artistic expression, and culinary delight. As drop-dead arrogant as the Arc de Triomphe, as disarmingly quaint as a lac-curtain bistro, it seduces newcomers with a Latin-lover style and its subtle siren song invites unhurried exploration of its picture-perfect streets.
Paris is a city of vast, noble perspectives and intimate, ramashackle streets, of formal espaces vertes (green open spaces) and of quiet squares. This combination of the pompous and the private is one of the secrets of its perennial pull. Another is its size. Paris is relatively small as capitals go, with distances between many of its major sights and museums invariably walkable.
A visit to Paris will never be quite as simple as a quick look at Notre-Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower. You'll discover that around every corner, down every ruelle (little street) lies a resonance-in-wait.
You can stand on the rue du Faubourg St. Honore at the very spot Edmond Rostand set Ragueneau's pastry shop in Cyrano de Bergerac. You can read the letters of Madame de Sevigne in her actual hotel particulier, or private mansion, now the Musee Carnavalet. You can breathe in the fumes of hubris before the extravagant onyx tomb Napoleon designed for himself. You can gaze through the gates at the school where Voltaire honed his wit and lay a garland on Oscar Wilde's poignant grave at pere Lachaise.

What images come to mind when you think of a trip to Venice? No doubt you imagine yourself taking a romantic gondola ride along narrow canals and under delicate bridges. Perhaps you picture the beautiful old buildings and famous works of art that have made the city one of Europe's leading tourist spots.
Venice was built on more than 100 islands and has about 150 canals. The best-known of these, the Grand Canal, functions as the "main street" in the part of the city most popular with visitors. The canal winds through each of the six districts that comprise this historic city center before reaching Venice Lagoon.
One of these districts, San Marco, is home to many of Venice's main attractions, including St. Mark's Basilica. This spectacular church has five main arches and some extraordinary onion shaped domes. It is decorated with priceless treasures, many of which were stolen from other countries when medieval Venice was a leading sea power.
Venice becomes even more enchanting during the carnival. The carnival is an annual celebration before Lent, a 40-day period of fasting that precedes Easter. The dates of the carnival vary year depending on the date of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
Venice's architecture includes representations of Italian, Arabic, Byzantine, and Renaissance styles. There are some 450 palaces and homes of major historic importance in Venice. Notable among its 400 bridges is the Bridge of Sighs and among its churches is St. Mark's Basilica.
Most of the city's workers find employment in tourism and related industries, though the city also plays a key market role within the vibrant economic system of the Veneto region.

The Austrian capital of Vienna (Wien) is a city forever implanted into the international imagination as a dreamy place of cream-filled pastries and angelic choir boys, of prancing white horses and swirling Strauss waltzes.
It is a city where legend overrules reality - the Danube River, which flows through Vienna, may not be true blue, yet, the "Blue Danube" waltz has permanently painted the waterway that hue in the mind's eye.
Music is the soul of Vienna - the great composers of Europe, from Mozart to Beethoven, Haydn to Schubert, Strauss to Mahler, called the city home.
And at every opportunity, from the grand Opera Ball to the smallest of musical gatherings, Viennese swoon together in the city's famously romantic waltz. Or they gather for dramatic musical stagings at the Staatsoper (State Opera House), one of the world's great opera venues.
Vienna celebrates its well-composed heritage with numerous festivals and concerts, as well as well-preserved landmarks such as Schubert's birthplace and the homes of Mozart and Beethoven.
Art and architecture are also Viennese trademarks, and with 90 museums, many devoted to art, the city is awash in great works. Art Nouveau (known locally as "Jungendstill", or Young Style) took hold here, born of the Vienna Secession which straddled the turn of the 20th century.
The movement's most famous member was Viennese painter Gustav Klimt, and his work, as well as that of other secessionists, is showcased at the Secession Pavilion, desighed by Josef Maria Olbrich. Vienna's most famous art museum, however, is the Kunsthistorisches Museum, housing works by such greats as the Dutch master Pieter Brueghel the Elder.
