  The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health.

  Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat.

  Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery.

The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

  “How can that be done? You are too cruel. Let it go at once. It is not guilty. How can you kill it? I cannot bear to see it panistricken, shedding tears and trembling before its death. ”

  “那怎么行呢!你們太殘忍了,趕快把牛放掉。它沒(méi)有罪,怎么能殺掉呢?我不忍心看到牛臨死前恐懼、流淚、戰(zhàn)栗的樣子。”

  牽牛的人問(wèn)道:

  “Do you mean that I shall let the ox go and not paint the bell? Is that it?”

  惠王回答說(shuō):“您的意思是要我把牛放了,不必再涂鐘了,是嗎?”

  King Hui answered: “What are you saying? How can you not paint the bell! Let the ox go, but use a sheep instead.
