New research shows that sheep are clever
People often make jokes about how dull sheep are, but new research shows they may be cleverer than we think. Researchers at the University of Cambridge discovered that Welsh mountain sheep have brainpower that equals rodents (嚙齒動(dòng)物). Tests found that the sheep can map the area they live in, and some may even be able to plan ahead.
Young fish prefer noisy neighbors
A new study has shown that young fish like to live on reefs with noisy neighbors! Researchers from the universities of Auckland and Bristol found that young fish looking for a home choose areas where other noisy fish live. The scientists produced all kinds of sounds which had been recorded in different natural environments. The young fish seemed to prefer the sounds of natural reefs, complete with noisy animals! The scientists compared the choice to a music fan wandering around at a music festival, choosing to set up a tent closest to the music they like best!

I grew up in London, a place where there are so many people of different nationalities and races. So when I left London to start university, it came as a surprise that the student community was so divided. Chinese students, especially, stood apart. They cooked Chinese food every day and only socialized with their Chinese friends. At first I wondered “Why are Chinese students so eager to come to the UK, yet not willing to make friends with the local students and learn about their culture?” But then I studied in China for a year, and I realized that all the foreign students there behaved in exactly the same way. They ate in foreign restaurants and only socialized with students from their own countries. It was a shock. Why were so many foreigners going to China if they didn’t want to meet local people and learn about their culture?
Our natural instinct (本能) when we move abroad into an unfamiliar environment is to seek out the things we know and distance ourselves from those we don’t. So we look for friends of the same nationality or race, and eat the food from our home country. I was not different from other foreign students in the beginning, but I tried to change. So every day I played basketball with my Chinese peers after class, I had meals with them in the campus canteen and I joined a band with other Asian students. Those are probably the three best ways to make friends when there is a risk of language or cultural barriers getting in the way: play together, embrace (欣然接受) each other’s food and share your passions.
24. When the author started university, he was surprised that ______.
A. there were so many Chinese students studying in the UK B. it was difficult to find a suitable student community
C. London was crowded with people of different nationalities and races D. students mostly stayed with others of the same nationality or race
25. The reason why foreign students don’t like to make friends with local people is that ______.
A. they want to stick to what they know
B. they look for the things they know and keep themselves away from those they don’t
C. they don’t want to be involved into the local community
D. the local people are not friendly
26. What is the best way to join the local community in the author’s opinion? A. Sharing hobbies with local people. B. Teaching local people how to play music. C. Learning to cook local food. D. Visiting local families frequently.
27. What is the best title for this article?
A. Ways to make friends B. Respect cultural differences
C. Let’s embrace the unknown D. Difficulties in studying abroad

The number of people hiding their identity while surfing the web has risen in the past year.
Research shows that the level of “encrypted” internet activity has risen dramatically across the world, suggesting that millions of people have begun to use software that hides who they are while accessing the web. According to Sandvine, the technology networking company, hidden internet traffic in peak hours in Europe has been up to 6.1 per cent of all web activities compared with about 1.5 per cent a year earlier. In North America encrypted traffic went up to 3.8 per cent from 2.3 per cent a year earlier, while in Latin America it jumped to almost 10.4 per cent from 1.8 per cent.
Experts said that the changes in online behavior were the result of exposure(曝光) about widespread internet spying by intelligence agencies, such as that exposed by Edward Snowden, the US National Security Agency whistleblower.
“It will be interesting to see how these trends develop,” said Ernesto Van der Sar, the pen-name used by the editor-in-chief of Torrentfreak.com, the website that first reported the figures. “In any case, it’s clear that internet services and their users are becoming more aware of their privacy online, which is generally a good development.”
Last week Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the British inventor of the web, defended the right of agencies to spy on the internet for law enforcement (強(qiáng)制實(shí)施) . He said, “We have to figure out how to balance that against rights.”

30. Why do more people hide their identity while surfing the web?

C. To follow the fashion. D. To prevent their privacy being spied on.
31. What’s Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s opinion on some agencies’ spying on the internet?
A. It’s illegal. B. It’s totally right.
C. It’s against human rights. D. It’s acceptable to some degree.

笫二節(jié)書面表達(dá)(滿分25分)
Dear fellow students,
Good morning I’m Li Hua. I’m glad to have the chance to run for captain of the voluntary organization. If I can be the captain, I will do the following things to help the students in our school.
First of all, I, together with other volunteers, will clean the campus every Friday afternoon so that we can have a clean and peaceful environment. Secondly, in order to make full use of the learning resources, I will call on students to donate their used books to set up a small library, where everyone can come to get what they are interested in. Thirdly, we will visit the nursing house near our school regularly. In this way we can learn to love and care for others.
I think I am fit for the work. Please trust me!
That’s all. Thank you!
聽力錄音原文Text 1
W: Can you help me? I’m trying to find the library.
M: Go two blocks and then turn right.
Text 2
M: I didn’t see Tom at his desk. The manager finally raised his salary?
W: No way! They had a heated argument. The manager decided to fire him.
Text 3
W: Do you think that the possibility of cold weather and snow will affect the result of the game?
M: Well, the Steelers are accustomed to playing in bad weather, so it shouldn’t make any difference to them.
Text 4
W: There’s a folk music concert tomorrow evening. Do you want to go?
M: I don’t like folk music very much.
W: What kind of music do you like then?
M: Classical music.
Text 5
W: I don’t think holding a big party is a bad idea. I love big parties. What’s more, we should pay back all our friends who invited us to their parties.
M: But big parties are so expensive. Don’t you think a smaller one would be more practical?
Text 6
M: Let’s have a party.
W: Good idea! When shall we have it?
M: What about Sunday evening?
W: That’s great. And where shall we have it?
M: I’m thinking of your flat.
W: Oh, you know what my landlady is like. She won’t let us have a party there.
M: Then let’s ask Gillis. Perhaps we can have it in his flat.
Text 7
W: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?
M: I have a little headache.
W: Didn’t you sleep well last night?
M: Not very well. I didn’t get to sleep for two or three hours. Then I tossed and turned (輾轉(zhuǎn)反側(cè))all night.
W: Didn’t you take an aspirin or anything?
M: I didn’t have any.
W: Didn’t you get up and go out to the chemist’s to get some?
M: I was too tired and I felt sick to my stomach, too. I thought I was going to throw up.
W: Didn’t you call a doctor?
M: I didn’t feel sick enough for that.
W: Aren’t you going to see a doctor today? Maybe you should take a little rest.
M: I’ll wait and see. Maybe I’ll feel better after a while.
W: Maybe you have a cold.
M: I don’t think so. I think it’s something I ate. I feel a little better now.
Text 8
M: Jane, I hear that you are leaving school now. What do you want to do? Have you made up your mind yet?
W: No, not yet. But I think I’m going to take up singing.
M: Any special reason?
W: Yes. It’s because I’m good at singing songs. All my classmates say so. Besides, singing is quite interesting and you can meet a lot of people.
M: And you will have to please them, too.
W: Well, you have to do that in any job, don’t you?
M: That’s true. What do your parents think about it?
W: They don’t quite agree with my idea. That’s the only trouble. They want to send me to a performing arts college because they want me to be an actress.
M: Then what will you do?
W: Well… I haven’t decided yet. But I usually get my own way in the end.
Text 9
W: Officer, I have something to report. My neighbors and I are concerned about the activity in a house near mine.
M: Could you please describe what you have seen?
W: Well, I’ve seen people coming and going there all day and late into the night. It just doesn’t look like normal activity.
M: What do you think is going on there?
W: Well, frankly, I guess that someone in that house must be selling drugs.
M: Wow, that’s huge. Did this just start recently?
W: No, it’s been going on for about a year.
M: Then why did you wait till now to report?
W: Actually, one of my neighbors reported it to the police several months ago. But they didn’t pay much attention. So I’m calling again.
M: Oh, I’m sorry about that. We do try our best to keep everyone free from danger. We just need to work harder to make our society better.
W: You’re right. And what we should do is helping the police.
M: Glad to hear you say so. We will check that house right now. Thank you for calling.

During my last year of school, I was given the opportunity to visit an advisor and I drove her crazy with my choices.
My first choice was a chocolate tester. I discovered that chocolate testers earn a lot of money, so I was sure I had found my dream job. However, when I found out that chocolate testers don’t just sit around eating chocolate all day and they are also involved in the marketing and promotion of the product, I finally gave it up.
Next, I thought of becoming a football referee (裁判員). I had loved football since I was young, but I couldn’t play well. Anyway, it seems that referees must be able to run 2.5 miles in less than twelve minutes and they are required to take exams throughout their training. On top of that, only after many years of experience—and if they are lucky—do they get the chance to referee big professional matches. So, my dream of showing David Beckham a red card disappeared.
Finally, I had this perfect idea of becoming a dog stylist after I realized how much our dog stylist was being paid. However, once, while she was styling our Philipo, I noticed he tried to bite her. As you can imagine, that really put me off.
All this research made me realize I had a gift for collecting information, so I had decided to become a journalist.
